Should T206 HOFers with rare backs receive the same multiplier?
T206 HOFers With Rare Backs - Same Multiplier?
I've heard a many T206 collectors suggest that T206 HOFers with rare backs don't deserve the same value multiplier as common players with rare backs. Their reasoning is that rare back collectors are paying mostly for the back alone, and that the player on the front doesn't mean much to them (therefore lessening the premium). I was wondering what board members thought about this argument.
Here's an example:
*let's assume for argument's sake that a Drum back commands a 50x multiplier
T206 Batch Portrait (w/Piedmont 150 fact. 25 back) approximate value in VG = $25
T206 Batch Portrait (w/ Drum 350 back) approximate value in VG = $1250 (50x multiplier)
T206 Speaker (w/Piedmont 150 fact. 25 back) approximate value in VG = $250
T206 Speaker (w/Drum 350 back) approximate value in VG = $12,500?? (50x multiplier)
Should the Drum backed Speaker really receive the same back multiplier as the Drum backed Batch?
Doesn't the Drum backed Speaker price cited above seem disproportionate to that of the Drum backed Batch?

Re: T206 HOFers With Rare Backs - Same Multiplier?
I remember around 3 years ago when there really was no premium added to the back of a HOFer. Couldn't figure out why and wish I would have picked up a few more. Now you see many collectors that collect only the tougher backs , or even tougher back HOFers that have driven up the prices. It is funny how the thinking can change over time.

The way the market prices them (a smaller premium for tougher backs on HOFers) makes sense to me.

I agree...
I agree that commons should have a higher multiplier than HOF'ers in regard to rare backed t206's...if the same multiplier is used on HOF'ers...prices can get pretty ludicrous!

I remember when the Barnings sold their 206 collection on ebay (2002). That was around the last time I can remember picking up HOFers with rare backs with no primium. I remember picking up a Joss pitching in ex+ with Sovereign for $136 and the BL 460 went for $1500 and the front was Willis a HOFer.
The BL 460 Willis card just traded hands in a deal worth more than 10k.
They had a bunch of southern Hindus in vg to ex that mostly went for around $150 each. I have a few of them but most are in Brians collection. Today those cards are $750+.
I remember picking up common rare backs in ex from them between $100 to $150 and it was about the same on HOFers except for the top teir ones -Cobbs and Mattys and Youngs.
Lee-I think we have been around a little longer than we remember. I think your 3 years are more like 6 to 8. This is 2009 and 2002 was 7 years ago. I remember paying heavy prices in 2006.

For those who voted "no"...
Do you think the same applies for E sets as well, such as E92 and its corresponding backs (Dockman/Croft's Candy/Croft's Cocoa/Nadja)?

E92s are a completely different story. I think most collectors don't consider them the same set.

Have to agree. Even though there are 4 different backs with e92 designation, they don't even have the same checklists. The e92 designation has always baffled me. Why would Burdick lump a 4 sets together with very different checklists, other times separate out sets like e104s?
