Ruth, Aaron and Bonds all hit over 700 HRs, but
Roger Connor, Harry Stovey and Sam Thompson all hit over 120 in the nineteenth century.
And nobody in the deadball error beat Stovery's 122, Thompson's 127 nor Connor's record 138 lifetime HRs; until Ruth.
Do I think that these 120+ are equivalent to the current standard of 700+ ?

Gil, It's kinda of Hard to compare stats from such different eras.
How would classify Crawford's 312 Triples, in comparison.

Boy, That's a tough call. I believe that some fieldss didn't have fences and fans actually sat in the outfield, almost a different set of rules.
As far as the triples, I think icould be match if they quite building such small stadiums. Those old ball parks had some huge outfields, Forbes field wwas over 460 ft at it's deepest.

One of the incarnations of Tiger stadium that Crawford played in for 2 or 3 years had a left-center field (iirc) that was 590 feet. Many of the new stadiums are much more triples friendly, but the smallness of these parks keeps triples from really exploding. I'd personally love to see larger parks with more Triples and IPHR than over the fence HRs. Over the fence HRs are very boring and anticlimatic. On the other hand, triples and IPHR are some of the most exciting events in the game.
As to the 19c HRs, as Lee pointed out, many 19c parks had no outfield fence other than a barrier to keep the fans from interfering with the OFers. Then there was Chicago which had the ridiculously close right field for one season that inflated the numbers of Ned Williamson and other White Stockings players.

Jerry - Sam Crawford is among the most interesting players who require further research.
For example, in addition to his triples, Crawford totalled 51 of his 97 HRs as inside-the-parkers.
My first question about him is "how many of his triples were actually failed attempts for additional inside the park HRs"?
The same would apply to Tommy Leach, who scored forty eight of his 63 HRs as inside-the-park (with 172 triples).
