T206 Cobb
Feedback please...
So if I wanted just one, graded T206 Cobb, which variation would you recommend and what would be the minimum grade? I wouldn't want a beater and can't afford high end.
Let me have it!

I personally prefer the bat off shoulder varition, a VG example tends to run around $800.

i like the bat on bet because he looks like a menace there...but i vote cobb red also, can't beat the classic portrait. i'd say u can get a killer 20/30 front with some slight back damage if you're picky and patient.

Re: T206 Cobb
Imho there is no "minimum grade" for a t206 Cobb, because all grades are always in high demand. So, the "minimum grade" is solely dictated by your budget and preferences.
But if you just want a t206 Cobb - which is cheapest?
I could be wrong, because t206 is not my game, but I think that all things being equal, the red is cheapest.
If you've got money to burn: PSA5, $1688, 7/14/08, ebay -

Re: T206 Cobb
Well, I'm not a fan of the 'bat on' version because it doesn't look like Cobb. But you can't go wrong with any of the other three. My favorite is the green portrait, but it's also the most expensive. Gil is correct, the red portrait is the most affordable, and a hobby classic.
If you're shopping for a nice graded example without breaking the bank, I'd target a vg'ish one that looks like Tony's (3-2-count). If you can find one with a great front but has slight back damage which holds the grade down, that would be ideal. One thing I always look for is perfect registration. There are plenty of off-register Cobb portraits that just don't look that good. I once had a red Cobb that was a bit off register (the yellow from his hair overlapped onto Cobb's forehead, and the detail in his eyes didn't line up). It really bugged me and I ended up trading the card.
When you're going for a card that will become a staple in your collection, I suggest saving up for a really nice one that doesn't have flaws that will bug you later. Be patient and don't settle. When you see the right one for sale, that "gotta have it" one, then you'll be happy you waited. One positive is that T206 Cobbs are very plentiful, so the wait shouldn't be too long Good luck.

My least favorite is the bat off shoulder. I believe the red background looks better than the green. Plus it's also cheaper.

I like the Bat off Shoulder, which has been the toughest for me to find.
The prices over the last couple weeks have been very strong (for all 4 types).
Green Portraits carry the highest premium, but you can sometimes find low grade examples with good eye appeal:

I prefer the Green and the Bat On variety. The Red is okay, but way too common as a "Super Print" for me (for this reason I also prefer Pink to Blue Chase; Cubs to Chicago Evers; Red to Yellow Chance -- although I prefer Dark to White Matty, so who knows?!). My least favorite is the Bat Off Shoulder version, in which I don't care much for the purple and think Cobb's black hat looks too much like one of the 1950's batting helmets.
But with any Cobb at any grade I agree you can't go wrong...

So what do you think of this red background Cobb on eBay? Price? Condition? LINK

Hi John -
This exact card sold two months ago in the last Goodwin's auction for $850 bucks. The last Sgc-40 on Ebay sold in July for $810.
The seller has an opening bid of $1179 on the card you attached a link to. Just some information to help you with your decision.
