1912 J=K Candy Lajoie pickup (!)
Edited to say....oops....I screwed up on this one

As you may know, there are two types of J=K's. Type one's are b&w, and shaped like a regular tobacco sized card. They came on one side of the candy box. Type 2's came on the other side of the box. They have an orangish tint, and half of the player's head is a die-cut. The die cut functioned as the end flap of the candy box, and is almost always creased where it meets with the main part of the card. Both types qualify as true rarities, but the type 2's are a bit tougher to find, especially with the die cut intact.
I was going to wait until it arrived before I posted here, but what the heck....I wanted to share the joy 8)

nice pick up. I need the Bedient card, but there are only 2 known examples and last I knew, both were owned by guys trying to collect the set so there is currently little hope of ever getting that card

Oh oh. A kind FC member just sent me this link to an item from the same seller:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250199510830
Not looking good for the authenticity of this card
Looks like I may have to take a hit on this one. Boy you really can't let your guard down these days. I should have been more scrutinizing.

Oh GOD Ben - Josephina has sold reprints for ages on eBay! How did you pay for the card? I hope you can get your money back.
I had a similar situation a couple years back on eBay with someone from FL. I won an E97 Cy Young. When the card arrived, I could tell right away it was a fake. I was able to get $175 back from eBay and a collection agency got me another couple hundred, but I had paid around $800 for the card.
I learned you will not get your money (or any of it for that matter) back easily from these sellers of fake cards. They always state they didn't know anything about the item and sold it "as-is" - playing dumb. If you sent a check or Cashier's Check, you can stop payment on those payments. However, if you sent a Money Order, there is little you can do. PayPal payments might be disputed - I have never had to do that, so don't know how that turns out.
I hope your situation turns out better than mine - please keep us posted.

Here's the good news, Scott. I haven't payed for the card yet. And I don't plan to.
Re: 1912 J=K Candy Lajoie pickup (!)
GREAT BEN! I am happy you haven't paid for it yet
and you are very astute for NOT paying for the item!

It's all thanks to Gil for pointing it out to me, and to this board as well. If I hadn't posted this thread, I'd be out of $400+ with very little recourse.
Looks like I'll be getting my first ever neg on ebay

A negative is better than lsing $400 - I would take that trade any day! Be sure to leave a negative for the seller, should they slam you with one.

Don't Sweat the negative, just make good responses in the feedback. Think of how you check feedback and what you look for as acceptable reasons for a negative. I personally have 2, one for the same type of situation.

I tried to save you myself Ben. Scott said it perfectly and Lee is also correct. Don't worry about your negative and her feedback is already atrocious so you will be beating hers down as well. JUST MAKE SURE you respond to the non paying bidder she files because if you do not, your negative to her will be removed automatically. Dan.

Re: 1912 J=K Candy Lajoie pickup (!)
Initially, the scan had me fooled. There's nothing obvious about the scan in the auction that screams "fake". But after viewing the other prewar cards the seller had listed previously, the chances of it being real went down the tube. As was pointed out to me by another forum member, Josephina has been selling scores of fake cards on ebay for some time. Sometimes identified as fakes, other times not. A few of them look like homemade jobs.
The Herpolsheimer's Cobb is a good example - that card is extremely rare - from a recent find where each card is 1/1, and his copy looks bad in so many ways. Seeing that made me lose all confidence in the Lajoie being genuine.

Also, being contacted by several hobby vets with experience in this set, who both said it was a fake, certainly made it easier in coming to that conclusion.
Re: 1912 J=K Candy Lajoie pickup (!)
That would make a 3rd Bedient. If you ever decide to part with it, please keep me in mind. Would you be willing to trade it for another J=K card?

Jay, you had asked me about the Bedient a few years back. Wonder if that's one of the ones you're counting, or do you know the other two people with one? Anyway, anythings possible. So we don't have to bore everyone else on this board, just e-mail me: gvanaken@cox.net

Ben, given eBay's new feedback rules, as a buyer, you never have to worry about getting a negative.
