And you say Strip cards get No Love
Coupled with not many cards from his playing career and Hof election. This one performed quite Nicely. Wonder what this card would have sold for in 2007 before his election to HOF.

Re: And you say Strip cards get No Love
Did you link the wrong card because BIlly Southworth is not in the HOF.

Re: And you say Strip cards get No Love
Billy Southworth, who was named by the Veterans Committee to the Hall of Fame in 2007, was a major league player for 13 seasons and also a major league manager for 13 seasons. As a player he was above average, while as a manager he had a notable .597 winning percentage, and won the pennant four times. Two of the wartime teams he managed won the World Series.

BTW I think that W514 price is absurd. That's as much as a Ruth would cost from that set.
Re: And you say Strip cards get No Love
Ben, I agree, That price is absurd. My snipe was set at 37.77

Jay,
The Veterans Committee put him in this year in the managers and executives election, along with Barney Dreyfuss from the deadball era.

Here's an article I found about the Veterans Committee inductions.

Re: And you say Strip cards get No Love
OK, I see the error. He is part of the 2008 ballot, not 2007. It's still odd that baseball-reference.com doesn't list him as a HOFer yet. Or do they wait until a person is officially inducted?

Re: And you say Strip cards get No Love
I have a bunch of old Beckett Price Guides which I picked up through the years, and being a pack rat, have kept eventhough I realize that they did not always keep their fingers on the pulse of the pre-war marketplace. The last one I bought was 1991, until a few years ago, I picked up a new one, just for continuity of the mostly useless information.
Tonight I looked at the price changes reported for w517 strip cards. In 1979 they did not list individual card prices, but stated that a vg/ex common was valued at $8.50. The following updates to that price are indicated:
...............................1982..............1984.............1988.............1991.............2004
common vg/ex........$8.50............$8.00...........$22.50..........$20.00..........$20.00
Ruth vg/ex.............$80/100.....$225/150........$500/600......$500/600.....$750/1000 vg
Foxx vg/ex................$24...............$21................$60..............$200............$225 vg
Gehrig vg/ex..............$50...............$45................$275............$300............$500 vg
I believe that when taken over this 25 year span, the inherent inaccuracies associated with a potential lack of attention to between year price variations are normalized out, and the trend indicated is likely realistic. Therefore, for this set it can be concluded that stars outperformed commons, and top stars outperformed near top stars, and actually increased 10x.
