E107 tidbit

Post by deadballfreak on Wed Jan 09, 2013 9:42 am

The E107 set is probably my all time favorite. I have 6 and can't afford any more. I was going through the checklist the other day and discovered that one card is misidentified. Beck of Detroit is listed as Fred Beck. Fred is in the T206 set, but he didn't even start in the minor leagues until 1905 and made the show in 1909. This is actually Ervin (Erve, Dutch) Beck. He played for Detroit in 1902 and then went back to the minors for a couple of years. His career record looks a little odd. Played for 4 different teams in the majors in a three year period and was a damn good hitter. He must have been a butcher in the field. He died at age 38 in 1916 so I expect he had other problems. Maybe this is not news to some, but every checklist I see says Fred and they are being encapsulated that way.

Nice card and great condition for a E107. Thanks for sharing. I have a few in my collection too, and yes, they are bank breakers. If you don't mind me asking, which other ones do you have in your collection?

Erve Becks' Obit: Great stuff, had no idea he was a former PCL player.

Battled something for eight weeks, probably not a "death by misadventure".

Ken,

I should say that not only is it a cool realization, but it is a rockin' card. High grade and very cool pose - he looks serious. The contrast is outstanding on that particular photo. He is all business.

Great card ! I too love the substitute designation.

Looks like it was just a PSA error as opposed to anything else. It's the Cy / Irv Young type of errors that are really bothersome.

Always cool to figure out who a player is though.

I felt pretty good about discerning the George Davis in the '33 Goudey set from the HOFer... and that was a lot less impressive than your delineation.

I'd love to see more E107s if you've got 'em!

Thanks for the obit. Apparently his minor league records are very incomplete. I don't see anything after 1906, but he must have played nearly up until his death.

The Beck is not mine. I wish it was! Got the pic off an auction site to show how Beck is always incorrectly identified. Here are mine. Well used shall we say. I think some here might recognize some of them. The Plank is obviously trimmed, but one of my favorite cards in my collection. All three have the "150 prominent ballplayers " back.

Last and least. This dog floated around ebay about 4 times before I got it. Willie Sudoff with the creeping brown crud.

Do you think it got the stains before or after it was pinned on the wall? Another nice card there Ken.

I want an E107 Mike Donlin! Donlin is one of my favorites. A great player and a real eccentric. Plus he is in a Cardinal uniform.

Jerry, that's gotta be one of the nicest e107 "10's" out there! Love it.

Great card. Plus you get Ozzie's full name, unlike most of his other cards.
