Resources for entertainment memorabilia?

Post by BigGuy219 on Wed Jul 18, 2012 4:46 am

In another thread we were discussing scandals in the art world, and that led me into thinking of an Audrey Hepburn movie.

So I've been sitting here thinking, "Hmm. I think I'd like to pick up an Audrey Hepburn autograph."

I have no idea about the entertainment memorabilia industry. I don't know pricing or authenticators. I'm as dense as they come.

I'd imagine if people are out there faking Roger Clemens, people are definitely out there faking Audrey Hepburn.

Anyone here ever collect entertainment stuff?

I think Spence authenticates more than just sports sigs. You could probably contact Rob Lifson or one of the other major auction houses and see who they use to get non-sport sigs authenticated.

I'm not a big autograph fan but I think it would be cool to have sigs of Einstein, Oppenheimer and Hawking.

Had a chance to buy a signed first edition of Foundation by Issac Asimov but could justify spending the $1500

Jay, can't help you with an Einstein, Oppenheimer, Hawking, or even Asimov autograph but would a signed Man or Astroman? "Born of Woman, Recreated by Outer Space" LP suffice? yes

Audrey Hepburn did not like watching, or reliving her own movies according to her biography (An Elegant Spirit), and did not sign many autographs. OK, OK... I read it! I like her! Although I am sure an original autographed Breakfast at Tiffany's poster could be found at Coach's Corner. Thank goodness, I prefer Two for the Road.

I've always kinda wanted to collect vintage rock n roll posters (1960's - 1980's), but know nothing about it. I know there's a huge market for that stuff. I'm talking Zeppelin, Sabbath, Doors, Pink Floyd, Marley, Hendrix, and some later/heavier stuff like Metallica. Some of the early posters from those bands must be pretty scarce and valuable. Anyone have some cool rock n roll memorabilia to show off?

Here's an interesting piece owned by a friend of a friend:

It's a 1963 Epiphone Coronet once owned by Steve Marriott of the British band "Small Faces". I don't know much about the band but it's a cool guitar.

Edited to add: turns out they were just inducted into the rocknroll HOF last year!

So I went to Profiles in History and looked at their upcoming auction.

Amazing stuff. Blew me away. If you like movies it's definitely worth a look.

They had an entire section devoted to Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe autographs, but the only Audrey Hepburn they had was the aforementioned Breakfast at Tiffany's poster, which I wouldn't be interested in.

Can anyone spot me $120,000 for William Holden's Oscar?

Not mine, and I don't know if it's authentic, BUT this dealer is offering a piece from Two For the Road signed by Hepburn and Finney.

I used to have a small collection of Filmore (San Francisco) posters from '60s featuring the Greatful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, etc. Even in bad shape they bring in good money.

That Hepburn auto on the Two for the Road LP is right up my alley but I don't know enough about it to shell out $300.

Still have a Nirvana / Screaming Trees / King Krab poster for their show at Hal Holmes Center here in Ellensburg April, 1989. Shortly after there first album "Bleach" came out. If memory serves me they only played a couple songs until Krist Novoselics' girlfriend got kicked out of the show for moshing & stage diving. Fight ensued. Chad Channing (Nirvana's original drummer) threw his kit at security... a good time was had by all!

That Nirvana poster sounds really cool, even better with the story and memories to go along with it. Great to see a band like that before they were famous. I had a similar experience with the White Stripes when I lived in Montreal. There are a lot of Nirvana fanatics still out there, so I bet a Bleach era poster is worth a good chunk of change.

Wish I could say "I knew they were going to be great", but they only played a couple of songs, and then all hell broke loose. Don't think I bought a copy of Bleach until after Nevermind came out. There were only 100 people at the show, most were in attendance to see the Screaming Trees who had just recorded "Buzz Factory", and King Krab ("Stronghold" EP). The Trees and Krab were both from Ellensburg, and Cobain had relatives here. I remember talking with a VERY drunk Cobain at the after hours party, and recall laughing when he tried to tell me where his relatives lived in the valley. He struggled with the name of a local ridge, "Manastash".

I've had some offers on the poster but don't think I could ever part with it. It's really DIY.. 8X14 inch blue copier paper. Maybe cost a penny to make, probably fetch a few hundred today.
