what is up with this.....

http://cgi.ebay.com/1914-Piedmont-Art-Stamp-T330-Zach-Wheat-Graded-PSA-NR-/130530615797?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item1e643b21f5

i need zach for my set, so i am asking.........isn't there paper loss on Zach's nose? if so (and i'm not bashing psa; they do that all on their own) how did this wind up a 2?

the paper loss on the back is obvious and i could almost see it getting a 2....almost with the visible wrinkles on the top left.....

regardless of grade, how did this card end north of $300 (with paper loss on both sides)?

i can attest to the rarity of piedmont stamps, but wow.......

looking forward to your comments.

best regards,
andy becker

Hi Andy,

I was the winner of the Wheat. I have been picking the stamps up when ever I got a chance if they did happen to show up. They are few and far between as you now. There are times I have been able to pick them up cheap and other times they go for huge money if the right bidders get involved. Not a rip on you Andy, but since you got involved it has pushed the prices up quite a bit. I use to be able to pick commons up for $20, now it seems like you have to pay $100 if one happens to come up.

As far as the condition, unless they are really nice, the fact it is authentic is the big thing. I now you have seen my graded ones I have posted and have no clue how the grading companies even grade them.

There have been times in the past where the market is here or higher with the right bidders involved.

Andy, How many have you been able to obtain? I am around 30 and that's over about a 10 year period.

hi Lee,
congrats on the pick up!....and i hope my post wasn't offensive to you, i was just surprised by the final price.

wheat is one, of many, that i haven't seen before......i was really questioning my eyesight regarding the paper loss on his nose. i still am, is that paper loss?

i have tried to limit myself to examples that do not have any back damage. since these are/were stamps, that has been somewhat challenging. i have been willing to pay a premium for nicer stamps. i guess in that regard i probably have changed the market a bit.

i haven't been chasing these for ten years....maybe 5....and i probably have 30 or so myself. i might even have a couple dups for trading.

congrats again on picking up a VERY tough HOFer.

best regards,
andy

Andy, No offense. I just upped my buying prices lately on the issue. As always there has to be 2 to make the price. Where did you fall in the bidding?

From What I could tell from the scan is that it does have paper loss on the nose. This is one of the few issues that some paper lose doesn't bother me.

I think it is a fun secondary issue to have in your collection. If it was a primary it sure would be frustrating.

i did not bid on this one.

again, a great pick up of a tough card from a very tough set.....congrats!

it's nice to discuss these, Lee (i'm not sure anyone else cares Smile ).....i'll try to post some scans in the next week or so to keep the thread rolling.

Lee, we should talk more.....

best regards,
andy

A recent auction of of a lot of 23 (2 HOFers, one severe front damage) all with some sort of damage, all with back damage went for over $2700. Definately seems like one of the up trending sets.
