Re: Rank your top 10 "best" cards
Thanks again John. Just sorta getting back into the hobby on my summer off. I enjoy what I have, but obviously I'm just a guppy swimming on the surface of a very deep sea. Always enjoy seeing stuff from your awesome collection whenever you choose to share.
Re: Rank your top 10 "best" cards
Awesome stuff, Ben, thanks for showing. Glad to have you more active now. Good choice on the new avatar, too, btw. What a freakin' beautiful card that Kelly is.
I don't own ten pre-war cards, but would rank the ones I own like this:
1. N173 Ewing & Mascot SGC 80
2. N172 Delahanty SGC 84
3. N172 "Sunday Kelly" SGC 20
4. N172 Brownies Comiskey SGC 20
5. N172 Sam Thompson SGC 10
6. N172 Jimmy Ryan SGC 10
Here's a link to my best stuff:
http://www.sgccardregistry.com/set.aspx?cat=6&set=648
I'd love to see some of the other folks on this board comprise their lists.

Re: Rank your top 10 "best" cards
Ben busting those cards you're far from guppy status.
Besides there is no whale or guppy's. I always laugh at clowns like Dorskind and his lame ass "whale" comments.
If you enjoy cards you just enjoy cards that simple. Some of my favs are $20 cards and others...well...
Bottom line cards are cards all are fun and all are great some just cost more than others that's the nature of the beast always been that way. Just remember there were guys pissing and moaning in the 60's about paying $5 spots for Planks in EX and guy sin the 80's had there been chat boards would have been posting.."when are these damn tough backs going to correct?"..."$50 bucks for Drums in VGEX...just crazy the bubble has to burst soon".
I know you dont buy into that jazz and were poking fun. However on the odd chance anyone new is reading this just remember anybody trys to put a label on your collecting with fish status tags tell em' Wonka said to tell them to blow it out their blow holes.
BTW. Dug the band and watched your tubes from the DR. I'm down there every few months on business I'll ping you next time I roll down lets get some drinks and hit the town.
Cheers,
John

Jamie,
There are a few cards in the hobby (I can count on one hand) that make me grind my teeth with silly good humoured jealousy that N173 Ewing & Mascot SGC 80 of yours is one.
Cheers,
John

Re: Rank your top 10 "best" cards
Big Ed's going on summer vacation.
I actually find Bruce Dorskind's posts interesting. People get bent out of shape about the "we" thing, it is just a business slang, like if you are setting up a store and are the sole employee, you still say, "We buy gold!" or whatever. I certainly don't share his political views, however.
I have a lot of respect for people who hash together collections on a low budget. I think it's cool that they are into it. Ben has awesome cards, maybe not a whale but clearly a shark.

Re: Rank your top 10 "best" cards
I've only got 6 cards that are really worthwhile
1 with a Sporting News back
2 From the GeorgeD collection
3 e92 Nadja haven't seen better color or registration for this card
4 e270 Speaker
5 t205 Joss
6 Delong Gehrig
That's it for me. I have all the HOFers from the t205 set, an e92 Matty and some other decent cards but they are all very low grade like George C Miller Ott and 1940 Play Ball DiMaggio

Great Thorpe! I, for one, have an appreciation for T205 HOFers.

John - absolutely drop me a line next time you're in the DR. I'll show you some great spots. And thanks for the kind words re: the band and everything else. It was an exceptional year for me down there, both musically and professionally, but it's also really nice to be back with the family over the summer and to have some time to get back into collecting.
And yes, I was being facetious with the guppy comment as you well know....some of that stuff over there is so ridiculous it becomes almost comedic. I think the majority over here has a pretty healthy attitude towards collecting, regardless of budget/social status. I feel pretty lucky to have a tight knit group of collectors to fraternize with here on FC when we pretty much started from nothing 4 years ago.
Re: Rank your top 10 "best" cards

Re: Rank your top 10 "best" cards
Hey Ty, a W514 Joe Jackson PSA 3 is a super nice card, IMO it's the best "W" strip card there is. Surprised it only ranked 8th on your list!!
Thanks for sharing....looking forward to everyone's responses.

Thanks Ben, traded a used up 390ci out of a '65 Ford Galaxie for that Jackson. Strangest trade I've ever made.

How many of your top cards are ones you are not willing to part with?
For me, the Thorpe and Jennings cards are untouchable unless the offered price is insane. The Oakes and Speaker cards are almost in that category. The price can be a little less insane

I would part with anything in my collection for the right deal (love to trade) but it would be very difficult to pry my top 3 away from me (E107 Joss/N321 Sweeney/t206 proof).
