Collecting Q & A Empty Collecting Q & A

Post by crazylocomerk Mon Nov 17, 2008 3:08 am

For my 1000th post I thought I'd do a little Q & A. I will post the questions, and then reply a bit later with my responses. I may have posted one of these in the past, but it was probably close to a year ago. We have a lot more members, so nothing wrong with bringing it back up and getting to know a few more.

1) Are you a type collector or set collector, or both?

2) What is your favorite card from your collection? Show a pic.

3) What is your favorite set? Show a pic of your favorite card from that set.

4) What is your favorite back (in your collection)? Show a pic.

5) How many cards are in your collection?

6) How long have you been collecting vintage baseball cards, and how did you get into the hobby?

7) How do you acquire most of your cards?

1) Are you a type collector or set collector, or both?

Currently a set collector working on the t205, Delong and Diamond Star sets.

2) What is your favorite card from your collection? Show a pic.

Not part of the any set I am working on, but a card that will never leave my collection
Collecting Q & A Thorpe

3) What is your favorite set? Show a pic of your favorite card from that set.

The 3 sets I collect. If push came to shove, I'd have go with t205s
Collecting Q & A T205joss

4) What is your favorite back (in your collection)? Show a pic.
all the backs of cards in my collection are pretty nondescript. I like the tribute on the back of the Joss card, but I don't have a scan of it.

5) How many cards are in your collection? 95

6) How long have you been collecting vintage baseball cards, and how did you get into the hobby?

I bought my first vintage card in 1980. I sold my original collection in 1992 and returned to the hobby in 2002. I got interested when I found the 2nd edition of the Beckett annual in a bookstore and the Erbe and Mitchel book baseball cards.

7) How do you acquire most of your cards?

eBay, less and less and more from trades and fellow collectors

T206 Mordecai Brown- one of the Wedding Gifts my wife gave me almost 10 years ago!!! (waiting for it to come back fom SGC this week)

1) Are you a type collector or set collector, or both?

Type collector for the most part. I really dig the scarce/oddball stuff. However, I'm nearing completion on a collector grade e96 set which has been fun.

2) What is your favorite card from your collection? Show a pic.

Tough call. It's between my T206 Proof, D359 Plank, and E107 Joss. I'll post my Plank for now:

Collecting Q & A D359Plank

3) What is your favorite set? Show a pic of your favorite card from that set.

Tough to narrow it down to one. My favorites include E107, Ramly, D359, D381, and the Louisiana T issues (T213/4/5/6).

4) What is your favorite back (in your collection)? Show a pic.

Voskamps
Collecting Q & A Voskamps2

5) How many cards are in your collection?

About 120 prewar cards right now.

6) How long have you been collecting vintage baseball cards, and how did you get into the hobby?

I've been collecting sports cards all my life, but exclusively prewar baseball for just about 9 years now. Got into it because I was collecting prewar hockey issues at the time (C55, C56). It was sort of a natural progression.

7) How do you acquire most of your cards?

It used to be mostly ebay, but that's becoming more and more rare lately. I'm not as active now as I used to be. Most of my pickups these days come via trade with fellow collectors.

1) I think I fall under the both category, I do have a T202 set, had a T206 collections minus the Big 5, have recently sold off many of my common back commons, but I also have a wide variety of cards.

2) T3 Cobb, kind of dirty but never thought I would own one:

Collecting Q & A T3cobb10

3) T202 by far is my favorite, love the two players and the action photo:

Collecting Q & A T202se10

4) I love the backs of T202s, great write ups, this one is a tough black factory 30:

Collecting Q & A T2020810

5) I really don't have a clue, I know I have over 500 T206s, about 200 T202s, 25 Piedmont Art Stamps, the rest is a smattering of this and that. Some day I might get it all organized.

6) I think around the early 80's bought my first T202 and have been hooked ever since.

7) Ebay, BST

1) Are you a type collector or set collector, or both?
A little of both. I type collect mostly, however I have begun putting together a T216 set, and am currently really into it, more so then anything else.

2) What is your favorite card from your collection? Show a pic.
This would be a toss up between my T214 Victory Tobacco Joe Kelly or my T206 Walter Johnson (pitching) with a Lenox back

Collecting Q & A 1909-11T206JohnsonWalterLenoxBack_P

3) What is your favorite set? Show a pic of your favorite card from that set.
T216's which I'm currently working on. I also enjoy T206's and will one day get back into them.

Collecting Q & A 1911-16T216TyCobbHOFKottonType3

4) What is your favorite back (in your collection)? Show a pic.
I do like backs a lot, so this is really a toss up for me. In T206's it would be DRUM or UZIT. And in T216's I like MINO's. But I also like the Blue Croft's Candy E92, so I'll post that one.

Collecting Q & A 1909E92HansLobertCroftsCandyBLUE

5) How many cards are in your collection? 45

6) How long have you been collecting vintage baseball cards, and how did you get into the hobby?

This January will be 2 years. Up until December of 2006 (2 years leading up to it) I was collecting vintage redline Hot Wheels (1968-1972). Then in December of 2006 on the hot wheels forum that I was part of, someone posted some T206's for trade for redlines. I was looking through what he had and instantly knew, that is what I want to collect. I never traded for any of his just because I didn't know anything about them or how much they were worth. But in January of 2007, I purchased my first T206 with the proceeds of selling off my entire redline collection.....followed by 70 more T206's. The first prewar card I ever bought was this Ed Abbaticchio, which I've since sold

Collecting Q & A AbbaticchioEdBrownSleeves

7) How do you acquire most of your cards?
Used to be Ebay. Rarely acquire anything there now. So Auction houses and the B/S/T boards via trades and purchases.

1) Are you a type collector or set collector, or both?

Type collector. I made another attempt to put together a few 30 card sets, but have recently abandoned those.

2) What is your favorite card from your collection? Show a pic.

E300 Ty Cobb or Macintire Harry Wright

3) What is your favorite set?

E104

4) What is your favorite back (in your collection)?

T205 since they have text about the players. No longer interested in rare advertisement backs.

5) How many cards are in your collection?

Thousands but most of it is crap. Maybe 50 or so are worthwhile prewar cards.

6) How long have you been collecting vintage baseball cards, and how did you get into the hobby?

I have been collecting cards my entire life, PSA 8 1950s cards in the 1990s, and prewar cards starting in 1999.

7) How do you acquire most of your cards?

Auctions houses, private trades, and ebay.

1) Are you a type collector or set collector, or both?

I would say I'm a set collector, with my "set" being Minneapolis and St. Paul stuff.

2) What is your favorite card from your collection? Show a pic.

3) What is your favorite set? Show a pic of your favorite card from that set.

I guess T206 is my favorite set, that's where my collection started, but I think that T204 are perty lookin' cards.

Collecting Q & A CravathEPDG

4) What is your favorite back (in your collection)? Show a pic.

Collecting Q & A CollinspbB

5) How many cards are in your collection?

About 25.

6) How long have you been collecting vintage baseball cards, and how did you get into the hobby?

It's been about 5 years now; looking for old Minneapolis stuff I came across at T206 Irv Young in eBay which I bought from Steve Y. I collected cards from when I was 5 til 18, but stopped for 6 years and started slowing buying cards but 3 years ago I started buying and selling to fund my purchases.

7) How do you acquire most of your cards?

BST and eBay; I've purchased one card from Barry's auction.

1) Are you a type collector or set collector, or both?

Type Collector

2) What is your favorite card from your collection? Show a pic.

Not really a card, but I've always liked the large silks (S81):
Collecting Q & A S81_2101)

3) What is your favorite set? Show a pic of your favorite card from that set.

Gotta love the red backgrounds of the Cracker Jacks. That's one of the few sets I'd like to collect. Too many cards and too many HOFers (especially Cobb & Joe Jackson) would get in the way of the expensive types I still need.

4) What is your favorite back (in your collection)? Show a pic.

Like I said, I like red
Collecting Q & A Redsun10

5) How many cards are in your collection?

No idea.

6) How long have you been collecting vintage baseball cards, and how did you get into the hobby?

Bought my first pack around 1974 but really started buying cards in 1977. I picked up the #2 Beckett price guide. Between the prices, it had a few color pages showing one card from most of the Topps issues. I thought that would be fun, so started looking for an example from each year. Then at one card shop they had some tobacco cards. Of course I had to buy one. Years too late I learned that there are way too many types out there, but of course now it's too late...

7) How do you acquire most of your cards?

I used to buy most everything from dealers/shows, but now it's mostly eBay.

1) I collect Red Sox, so I guess I'm a team set collector.

2) Not accounting for value or condition so much, it is likely my E90-1 Cy Young:

Collecting Q & A E-90-110

3) I have a soft spot for T-206 as this was the first pre-war Red Sox set I completed. My fave is old Spoke himself, Tris Speaker:

Collecting Q & A T-206_10

4) I don't really collect backs. But I just got a Coupon Johnny Evers, so I'll show that back:

Collecting Q & A T213ev12

5) Tens of thousands, but as far as pre-war goes...probably about 200 items.

6) I bought my first "old" card about 25 years ago. I started getting into the early 20th century T-cards and E-cards about 10 years ago. I attended the PNW show at the Tacoma Dome in 1998 and I was hooked from then on. There have some been periods since then when I was not actively collecting though.

7) At first, card shows. Then Ebay and auctions. Now mostly a combination of Ebay and forums like this one (though I have me eye on some upcoming auctions).
