this was posted on the 19c SABR list:
...I ran across this in an 1888 Milwaukee paper regarding bats:
"The amount of wood consumed in one year in making 'bats' is almost
incredible. It would make 131,497 hoe handles, 227, 345 ax helves; or,
converted into toothpicks, would supply every free lunch fiend in
Chicago, St. Louis and Cincinnati for years to come."
