July Pick-Ups
I'll start the month off with a couple regional toughies, 1958 Wenatchee Chiefs Mini-cards. I can find ZERO information on these, but they seem to have come out of a sugar/caramel package of some type as the backs are stained like CJ's. My suspicion is these were out of Applets packages in Cashmere, Washington. I have seen four total, these two, Bert Haas and James Passilla. I'd imagine they made one of every regular roster player including Azcue (team photo below).

I did a search of my own about this set, and the only two meaningful returns I got were you! Nice cards, though. Are the backs blank (other than the staining), or is there any content or imagery?

Thank you. Yes, the backs are blank. No markings of any kind on the cards. I was offered a Bert Haas from this set by an Oregon collector on the board about a year or so ago. Never seen one before, it had a pinhole through his forehead, and passed. Been kicking myself for as long about that decision.
Then, last month three of these cards pop up on ebay from a Tacoma collector. I tried to contact the seller to find out where he/she got them, but have not heard back. I recognized them instantly, but was only able to acquire the two.

Players like this are fascinating to me. Owen seems to have had an 18-win season in the Florida D-league, while Boullon doesn't seem to have done much of note. Baseball-reference.com does not indicate either of them as dead, but that may be as much about their lack of thoroughness as actual accuracy. If they're alive, it'd be fun to talk to them about their experiences on this '58 team.

Agreed, love to listen to former ballplayers spin yarns about the game.
Are you still looking for Red Barn baseball cards, or was that Z-Nut? How's the t206 set coming? It's been too long away from the board.

Funny you should ask: Several new acquisitions recently. I particularly like the Pelty. Very clean for a 2.
I'm officially down to 7 cards to complete a 521 on The Monster (although I have a PSA10 reprint of Wagner, so let's call it a 521.1):
1. Cobb portrait (green)
2. Dahlen (Brooklyn)
3. Demmitt (St. Louis)
4. Magee (error card)
5. Mathewson (portrait)
6. O'Hara (St. Louis)
7. Shaughnessy (SL)
If you know this set, you know those 7 are apt to take me awhile. The only cards I'm not pursuing are the Plank, the Doyle rarity, and obviously any kind of real Wagner. Unless, of course, I suddenly get real rich.

Incredible! Those are some great additions, and only 7 to go is hard to believe. You are tenacious sir!

Many thanks. I know The Monster has been kind of 'done to death' for some folks, which I certainly understand. It gets more than its fair share of attention, and tends to overshadow a lot of other great sets. That said, it's been a heck of a lot of fun to put together, more fun than I've had with anything else in the hobby.
