Northwest African American Museum Exhibit
February 1, 2014 - November 9, 2014, the Northwest African American Museum will open an exhibit on the history of black baseball in Washington state. Quite a few board members contributed to this exhibit. The early history of black coal miners in the Cascades Mountains and the teams they assembled in the frontier towns of Roslyn and Franklin, was my small contribution to this exhibit (1890 - 1931). These, often segregated, town teams included notable ballplayers; Jimmy Claxton, Bob Saunders, Powell Barnett, and "Biscuits" Henry. NAAM curator Chieko Phillips did a remarkable job to bring many disparate stories and timelines together to emphasize the importance of baseball as a community effort.
