Re: October Pickups
Z-NUT, what set is this? I've always kinda wanted to put together a foreign-language set. This is a very cool, basic design. I'd be interested to know more about it.

That Crawford is a "grrrrrreat" looking 4. The centering and bold red background really make it stand out.

Re: October Pickups
highlights of my recent pickups, barely keeping it on-topic with the '59 topps gibson with the awesome pink background. the score traded emmitt was THE chase rookie card for football in the early-mid 90's, and a cool barkley star card.

I think that Gibson sig is a fake. It's don't look anything like the fake one Topps put on the card.
Re: October Pickups
I wasn't sure if I was going to post this or not. There was a thread across the street that I found a little unkind in regards to opinions of the hammer price, so I wasn't sure I wanted to 'out myself' or not. But, ultimately I decided that my friend's here have always been kind to me over the years and I shouldn't let people on a forum I'm not a member of spoil my fun. I am truly glad to have it in my collection, at any price.
This is my 3rd 1905 NY Giants world champion cabinet pickup in the past few weeks. I've finally focused my collection and I am very happy. Though I wonder how long I'll stick with it. I'm going to keep trying to add NY Giant cabinets going forward, as I've decided having a smaller, 'theme' collection is how I'd like to go. Thanks to a couple of the guys here for support in E-mail and PMs after what happened over there. I really appreciate you guys.

That's a great cabinet and you should be proud. As for the sticker price, obviously someone else was willing to pay one increment less. It's a terrific card and never mind what anyone else has to say about it.
Good taste.

Re: October Pickups
nice card, just a lil pricey tbh. i can't say much tho instead of buying a nice mid grade prewar hof'er i spent it on a bob gibson signature. there's about 5 million of those, and counting.

Re: October Pickups
Nice W600 - these things are really tough when it comes to specific subjects and teams. Who can really say what they should sell for?
I think if you just consider any non-HOFer W600 in that grade, you could say the final price was a bit high. But you don't see that Dahlen for sale every day...or year...or 5 years...
So nice acquisition!!!

Re: October Pickups
The one thing to consider with Dahlen is that he probably the best 19c/turn of the century player that isn't in HOF. He should be in. He was the SS in the game until Wagner appeared.

Dahlen is certainly right up there. I'd say that George Van Haltren has to be in the discussion too. Jimmy Ryan is also in the discussion, but is slightly behind the other two.

Dahlen was way better than those two guys and definitely belongs in the HOF. It's an injustice that he isn't in.

Re: October Pickups
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Truthfully, I wasn't aware of Bill Dahlen until I saw the card in the Mile High auction. My interest was because he was on the great Giants teams of 1904-'05. Personally I don't see him getting into the Hall of Fame, but even if he did I could have had three established Hall of Famers from Kevin Struss for the price of the one Dahlen.
For the first time, in a long time, I am happy that I have a focus to my collection. There are a number of auctions where I have to sit on my hands because there's nothing I'm after, so I think that when an item that does fit my collection comes up for bid I get excited and bid perhaps more than I should.
I love the cabinet though and doubt I could have found another one anytime soon. I'm sure I'll have plenty of more interesting bids in the years to come, but if one day I'm walking around a National and someone says, "This is Chris. The guy who collects New York Giants cabinets," then it'll be worth it.

right now the "he's that guy the chinese takeout place remembers his debit card" is pretty unique too.

Re: October Pickups
I was down at a supermarket in Chinatown and I was buying a roast duck, this was a few weeks ago. So I tried swiping my credit card, right? But it didn't work then the woman takes my credit card and starts punching in the numbers into the supermarket computer.
I didn't mind that, but then she actually inserted the last three digits on the back of my card into her computer system as well. I kind of left thinking... uh, oh, is this kosher? I did remind me of Chris's experience with his chinese restaurant.
Maybe they just have different standards about privacy than we do. Let's hope that's the case.

I've started paying almost exclusively in cash, but it doesn't change the fact that they still have it in their system. Oh well.
