outfield depth, that's all it is. don't think he's even replacement-level at this point

Not only is the thread misplaced, but so is the excitement.

Well, Pete, at least you know how Athletic fans felt in 1927 when they got Zach Wheat.

old, huge contract diminishing skills. The Mariners fans are probably happy than the Yankee fans. Don't see him making a difference.

...and those numbers were gathered while he hit clean-up for the first 50 games this year. He's 38, and has been the shadow of his former self the last couple years. I hope the trade will revitalize his bat, legs, and effort level but doubt it. I do think he's a Hall of Famer. Two more pitching prospects and if it turns out nearly as well for the M's as the Jesus Montero trade I'll take it.

Re: Ichiro is a Yankee
It's the last year of his contract, so dumping him for a few prospects probably isn't a bad idea. Although I hate seeing him go to the Yankees they probably offered more than anyone else. He could do well there since he will not be the "go-to" guy there and will most likely hit at the bottom of the order. So the pressure will be off.

New York Post wrote:A-Rod's return from a non-displaced fracture of his left hand in September very possibly will turn Suzuki into the most famous late-inning pinch-runner and defensive specialist in the game. Now a bunch of stuff has to fall in place for this to occur -- namely Rodriguez must get healthy, Eric Chavez must stay healthy and Ichiro must remain one of the softest hitters in the game. But that is not like, say, Newt Gingrich begging you to vote for Barack Obama unimaginable. Manager Joe Girardi already has had to tell Ichiro he is no longer a right fielder, top-of-the-order mainstay and no-doubt, play-everyday starter. And, in about a month, he might have to tell one of the iconic players of this era that he no longer starts much at all.
Sorry, Pete!!

Pete was right to be excited, Ichiro has made the rest of us look like a bunch of fools so far!

that's why they play the game. you don't just go by zips projection and fangraph stats and call it a season or else the angels would win it all already (too bad they f'n suck and i can't even watch them choke anymore).

Happy for Ichiro, not so much for Pete.
Hope it continues.... only 26 games thus far in the pinstripes but .322 is a helluva improvement over .261.

Re: Ichiro is a Yankee
Looks as though Ichiro has come back to earth. A .275 BA over 39 games is a little more like it. Oh yes, and the Yankees' 10 game AL East lead now only 1 game over the surprising O's and 2 over the Rays. 4 wins in their last 13 games. New York hasn't seen a choke like this since Reggie Miller was in a Pacers uniform! GO ANYONE BUT THE YANKS!
Also, the Mariners, 2nd best record in the AL since the trade.

Yanks are old and injured. I'm a Yankees fan but even I wouldn't mind seeing some new teams in the playoffs for a change. It would be refreshing to see the O's make it. I don't give the Yanks much of a chance, they are too beat up, too many injuries, but I will still be rooting for them regardless!

Re: Ichiro is a Yankee
At least Yankee fans can take some solace in the fact that the Red Sox have completely fallen apart. Saw them play yesterday against the M's and it was a woeful performance. What has happened to Boston?
Felix is definitely in the Cy Young conversation, a perfect game, 5 complete game shutouts, an era under 2.00 in his last 14 starts. Pretty impressive numbers.

I'm w/Jamie on this one...wow...we agree...again!!!!!!!
I will always root for the Yankees... but I am a realist...and ultimately I just want to see good baseball!!!!!
And yes...it is nice to see the Bosox sucking so badly!!!!!! But I must say they are very lucky they were able to unload all of those overpaid players...now they just need to axe Bobby V!
