Goodwin Auction
The Goodwin auction continue to amaze me at the prices they get especially the T206 tough backs. Personally I submitted 3 cards to them. One slightly higher than expected, one 40 % higher than what I hoped was top end and one that blew away the price for its back and grade (almost double what I have tracked in the past). I was hoping to get at least $1200 for the 3, would have been happy with $1000, would have been really happy with $1400. My finally total was just under $2200, needless to say I did buy myself a card.
With these sales I should be able to get my pitch and bat pinball machine really soon.

Re: Goodwin Auction
good stuff lee. i don't know where bill finds them, but from my experience his bidders and prices are legit.
to be fair with t206s the way it is you can literally double up on the price from last month if you're lucky...kinda like caramel prices from 5-6 years ago.

Couple of months ago I didn't have the cash, so it all worked out. I like the Dihigo. Arguably the greatest Negro League player ever and it's not like you see his cards all that often. So it's a great combo, top nothc HOFer that is seldom seen.

Hi Lee,
If you mean the TTT-back Stahl, I got it for my Red Sox set! Got another Weil Baking too. That's it for me.
I started the auction focussed only on getting the E107 Dinneen. The other SGC 30 that sold in recent years went for $1650. I bid this one up to $1650, but next time I looked some other bidders had taken it up to almost $3,000...

I was out at that point.

Regarding the OP, funny...I was thinking last night as I watched the bidding that I'd love to consign to this auction if I was selling..."deals" for buyers are few and far between...

Re: Goodwin Auction
Thanks Quan! I appreciate the props. I love the Nichols, too.
I'm happy now with my collection, I've got the best hitter and best pitcher from the 1890's in Nichols and Delahanty, both rookie cards. Plus I've got a Kelly and Ewing, who, in my view, are the two best players from their era.
I detest Cap Anson because I would hate to collect an openly racist player, plus Harry Wright was really an exec at that point so I don't feel the need. Glad you're getting back into pre-war, but I hope you go 19th cent at some point... give it a try.

Re: Goodwin Auction
I don't follow the Cuban card market at all but I think I got a good deal on the card. Then again, when you buy a card, that's all that matters.

I have never heard of Dihigo, but I like negro league cards in general. They are great keepsakes and I believe relatively rare. If you believe you got a good deal, more power to you.

Only problem with the Dihigo is that he's not wearing a zebra striped uni

Re: Goodwin Auction
Great e104-3. I've owned a number of them over the years and to say this issue is condition sensitive is an understatement.
Dihigo is arguably the greatest Negro League player ever. He not only was a great secondbaseman and outstanding at all other positions except catcher, he was also one of the best pitchers. Basically, he was Babe Ruth without power but better fielding at a more critical position.
Other Negro Leaguers get more press like Josh Gibson, Oscar Charlston, Buck Leonard and Satchel Paige, but no one was as good an all-around player as Dihigo.

Re: Goodwin Auction
blair, I feel much better now about not bidding on the T204 Stahl TTT back. Now I can just have you send me a photo and I can put in on my pinball machine.

Cheers,
John
P.S. Next time you have nice Ab's email me that way I dont have to fight a certain bidder.

Re: Goodwin Auction
Good calls, John! Other than the Nichols, those two OJ's were cards I thought were outstanding. Mattimore is so high grade plus you have the lying down pose, horizontal is kind of unique. And I almost placed a bid on the Sutton when I realized that one can't buy everything - oh wait, you can
Thank you Blair and Jerry for the compliments on the Nichols... and welcome back, John!
