The V128 Paulin's Candy Thread
These cards have many characteristics that card collectors love.
They are very scarce.
They are tough to find in high grade - there's the fact that these are candy cards that were handled by kids (so like baseball E-cards they are often lower grade). But even more significantly, the cards featured a premium offer which allowed a kid with a whole set of 70 to send them all in to be redeemed for either a hockey stick or a box of chocolates. The redeemed cards were either hole-punched (yikes!) or stamped on the back with a variety of stamp markings. There are collectors for these cards in all 3 forms: unredeemed, stamped and hole-punched. My observation of sales is that the unredeemed cards fetch the top prices, the stamped cards suffer a slight discount (sometimes very slight), and the hole-punched cards are steeply discounted. (I don't collect the hole-punched versions at all.)
Many subjects in this set are appearing on a card for the first time, including some hockey Hall-of-Famers like George Hainsworth and Bullet Joe Simpson. Some players make their only cardboard appearance in this set.
The date attributed to the set is in controversy. For years, the 70 cards of V128-1 were called 1923-24 cards. Now, several writers and auction houses agree that the dates should be 1924-26.
Feel free to show your V128 Paulin's cards here!
I'll start off with one of my new favorite cards - the rookie card of Hall-of-Famer Bullet Joe Simpson:

I'm also interested in learning just how many different stamp markings were used for redemptions. I know of at least 5 different ones, so if you have any please share scans!!!
Here's one of my Newsy Lalonde cards from the set with the reverse showing a fairly common redemption stamp...a green ink stamp stating "RECEIVED" surrounded by a deckle edge:

That Lalonde is killer!. Is it just me or was redeeming cards by punching holes in them really common for Canadian issues?

Cool stamp, my aunt used to live in Saskatoon so I've spent significant time there. Not surprisingly, it's a great hockey town...I mean, what else is there to do in the middle of frozen Saskatchewan?
