Re: Musial to get highest civilian honor
The first Superstar Player I saw live was Stan the Man.
In the mid 50's the Houston Buffs were a AA affiliate of the Cardnials and every year the Cards would come to town and play an exhibition game against the Buffs. I remember that coiled up stance and he would unwind like a spring that was suddenly released and the ball would rocket into the outfield for a hit.
Greatest line drive hitter of all time, in my book.
You definately knew you were watching something very speciaL.
Fond memories.

i was in awe of these guys the first time i watched when it was a game. the 40's and 50's were my favorite era. you didn't have the archaic rube feel of pre-war or polish sophistication of the 70's onward. just washed out faded pastel colors featuring teddy ballgame, stan the man, mickey, koufax feller etc in all their glories...the game was so beautiful and pure.

As a child growing up in SE Missouri the name of Musial was always spoken with reverance. I fondly recall both grandfathers and my Dad and Uncle effusing about Stan the Man. Although I never got to see him play I have had the opportunity to meet him several times in my life. What a gentleman on and off the field. With all due apologies to Albert, Stan will always be the man in Cardinal country.
