W-Series Are they all ugly?
I know the beauty is in the eye of the beholder but are any of the W-Series attractive and are nay of the technically cards?

I won't give a long philosophical answer, now will I choose to justify my answer with any reasoning or examples.
Merely I will be a troll and state, "Yes. They are all ugly."

I think W600's and W601's are very attractive.

W503's are probably my favorites, but many argue that they weren't actually W-cards.
I like the W574's for their unusual square shape - some cool looking cards in that set. Also the W575-2's have some really nice portraits.

Re: W-Series Are they all ugly?
The W designation was originally supposed to be for cards that were cut from strips or sheets. That is not always case as with the w600 set. My guess is that Burdick meant write m900 but wrote it upside down
Re: W-Series Are they all ugly?
yea i'd say those strip cards with the cut-out lines pretty ugly. why are w600s called W again? are other magazine premiums also classified as Ws?

Burdick never gave any rationale beyond the basic criteria for the set designation. There are all sorts of odd designation like the Old Mill cabinets are H-something.
Re: W-Series Are they all ugly?
Yeah, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind the W designation for the Sporting Life cabinets. If the M110 cabinets are M's, the we should probably be calling them M600's, right?
And as Jay said, the "H" designation for the rare Old Mill Cabinets also makes no sense...

I'm new to the forum but only collect w's. Why? They are relatively inexpensive, AND are ugly. Almost all have faces only a mother could love

I think ugliest card has to go to the r337 Babe Ruth. I swear that's a gorilla in a baseball uniform.
Re: W-Series Are they all ugly?
I should qualify my response, the especially ugly w's include: w512's, w513's, and some w514's. Some truly hideous 14's include Larry Doyles' no glove second baseman pose (is he playing cricket?), and Dode Paskerts' smile which singehandedly causes two downgrades because of his pearly whites dominating the cardboard. The 1926-28 12 & 13's look like a child drew them, but I'm assuming since they were still only a penny for four/five or ten they had to cut back on artists commissions.

Welcome to the board and feel free to share your love of these ugly beauties any time.
Re: W-Series Are they all ugly?
I didn't realize that Exhibits were W designations some of them are nice. Why the W600 & 601s are W's doesn't make sense but definately the nicest looking of the W's.
I want to see more scans of these ugly cards.

Re: W-Series Are they all ugly?
Here are some examples;
I am usually very pleased with SGC's grading but on this Dode Paskert they blew it (WAY OVERGRADED). In comparison I offer this PSA;/Users/deweymee/Desktop/dode paskert scan.jpg
And though this w513 is a truly beautiful strip, in condition (the scan cut off the bottom), the drawings are truly amateurish./Users/deweymee/Desktop/w513 strip.jpg
Enjoy these ugly beauties
