There have been as many unassisted triple plays in the past 17 years as there were in all of MLB prior to that. Any theories as to why this is the case?
No kiddin'? Sloppier base running was the first explanation that popped into my head, but I don't know if that's really the case. Probably not.
Ballplayers are more educated and in better physical condition than earlier ballplayers, but they are way stoopider. There have been more unassisted pickoffs by the pitcher in the past 17 years than in all of previous baseball. And an unassisted pickoff is the pitcher walking off the mound and tagging you out while you are wandering off the base.
