Scott...
It is an amazing card, i never seen anything like that.
Don't worry, your nice pickups make up for that one bad one.
My worst pickup was a E98 Lajoie PSA 3, i paid $1,175 and did it because i was thinking of starting the set. Well, i realized i could not complete the e98 set within reason and sold it to Dave F. and i think he listed it on Ebay.
Good thing i am not trying to complete the E98 set now, prices are crazy.

You may get more than that Scott. Your card appears complete, just off center. As such it theoretically could be seperated and matched up perfectly. That is the top matches exactly with the bottom, unless my perception is off.
Submit it to PSA. They will give you a 9.5 OC (Check with Mastro).

Hi Scott,
If I hadn't just spent a ton of money in the past month then I definitely would have been interested in your card as it is a really neat miscut but I just can't afford to spend too much more at the moment.
That card was one of the Crofts Cocoas in the lot which sold at a small auction house in central NJ in the summer of 2006.

I agree with Scott M.
That's a great card that goes beyond the usual errors and miscuts that you see.

Mark-
Ah yes...the E98 Lajoie PSA 3. You know I sold that card like a month before I decided to jump in on the e98's. Heck, even the deal you cut me, I lost like $300 off that over what it went for on eBay (if memory serves). My scanner worked TOO well and the auction winner even admited after he got it that the crease going through the card in my scan (below) looked worse than what it really was on the card.....so I think my scanner screwed me on that one! But...would have been nice to have still had the card as I really think it would have crossed over to a 40.

I have a scanner that does the same thing. It works too good, highlights imperfections too much that you can't even notice in normal viewing.
As far as my worst purchases, I bought 2 SGC 84 T206s for $700 each at the begining of the year, kniow they go for under $500.
I don't know why I bother with higrade cards, they usually end up being losing propositions, and they cost more money.

Re: What was your WORST purchase of 2007?
2007 was a slow buying year for me. I only added 12 new cards to the collection. Nothing really rare or expensive, so I there was no chance of overpaying for anything.
This year will be different, as far as buying goes. I just sent my e95 Cobb and e101 Wagner to REA. I'll be using that cash to buy a t205 Cobb and CJ Wagner. Hopefully with those sales and the sales of my other rare type cards, I can get the last really expensive card I need, a Joe Jackson.

Actually, I just thought of a "bad" deal. My t205 Young cost me $350. Given the condition, I think I overpaid, but I won't be selling the card any time in the near future, so overpaying a little bit is no big deal. Now if I was buying it to flip it, then I really got a bad deal.

Re: What was your WORST purchase of 2007?
My worst aquisition of 2007 actually was a trade (and my first trade at that). I picked up an E94 Bobby Byrne graded GAI 1, and traded away two T206 HOFers in PSA 3 condition for it (Joss Portrait and Clark Portrait). Those two HOFers cost me about $250. I then sold the E94 Byrne for $125.
As you can see, in 2007, I really didn't purchase any expensive cards for the most part until the very end. Most of those I still have and if I don't, then I traded them for something of more value.
I'm sure as I get into the more expensive cards, I'll feel some losses. But hopefully I won't have to or feel the need to move them any time soon.

I bought this off eBay for $800...looked great in the scans maybe a 4 or 5? Well there was a small crease on the top and it was graded a 2. Way to much to have it regraded so I finally decided to trade it, and the cards I received in the trade were ho hum. Wound up only loosing a couple hundred bucks but it damaged my ego.

2007 was a bad year for me personally as i lost alot of money buying cards with my heart instead of my head...basically overpaying for cards i like at the time and then taking big losses(25%+) later on. i'm a sucker. these days i'm happy just to break even on cards and get back my money for new stuff.

Buying with your heart is underrated. If you got stuff that you really loved, then you shouldn't be so disappointed.

Buying with your heart is never a bad thing. A money loss may hurt if you sell, but you bought something you really wanted. for me, that trumps everything.
In the 80s when I was doing consulting work with people building collections, I always foudn out what their favorite teams and players were, then had them build their collections around that. Many wanted to get in on whatever was hot and trendy, but I told them that when the market got soft or crashed, if you owned cards that you loved, any money loss wouldn't be so bad.

Jay-
Not trying to be a smartass...serious question, there were actually consultants for acquiring card collections in the 80's? Honestly this is the first I've ever heard of that. Sounds like it would be one heck of a fun job if you got paid for it!

Yeah, I actually made money helping people put together collections. I didn't charge much. I mostly made money from the sales of cards to them, basically playing middle man finding cards for them that they wanted. Aroudn 1987 I realized that it made more sense to play middle man that to put money on line buying cards. I basically got paid to find cards for people without having to risk buying cards that may have to sit on for awhile. Back then, I was pretty well connected and there weren't a lot of cards I couldn't find if you had the money to pry them loose from the owners.

I purchased two Topps Bewitched test cards graded by KSA the seller was from canada and had good feedback the cards came in the mail and they were printed on slick photo paper and you could see the pixels as it was a bad copy of a picture. Seller said to send cards back I did the post office could not find the address he sent me so when they returned he said the address was right and sent them again and you can figgure the rest of the story.......
I think I also purchased a fake sheet from the same set as it just looks way to shiny and slick.......
so could be a 3k loss.......... uurrrrrhhhhh

Re: What was your WORST purchase of 2007?
I won an SGC 30 common red cross tobacco in Goodwin's spring auction for just over $800 with juice, that I'd be lucky to get half that if I sold it today. I noticed Goodwin typically color-enhances their scans, as the card in hand does not have the same vibrant colors as the scan.
I think I was on the rebound from not winning any of a slew of red crosses that were in a verkman auction that went up a few days before, and my inner arrogant bidder emerged full force.
