E107 Christy Mathewson in Mastro
I received an email from Mastro a few days ago about their December NY live auction. The is going to be some spectacular cards including a T210 Joe Jackson. The card that caught my eye was the E107 Christy Mathewson, which imo is one of the greatest cards of all time.
Any guesses how much the card will sell for?

Given that this card is viewed by many as his RC (excluding the cabinets) and that this set is rare, the price could be as stratospheric as the SGC40 E107 Wagner which commanded something like $134K. I don't think it will go as high as the Wagner, but who knows when whales begin feeding. I'll take a stab at it and say $45K. E107s have been subject to a correction as the prices have been dropping, but I don't see this card being subject to the same type of price drops due to it being Christy, due to the rarity of the card, and due to the apparent solid condition of the card (based on the small scan).

Wow, that is one incredible card!
Might it be a new discovery? Or possibly part of an advanced collection that hasn't seen the market in decades? I ask because the only other E107 Matty I've ever seen is the one Andy Baran used to have, and they are different cards. Does anyone know of other E107 Mattys in existence? This one has a better appearance than Andy's old one; really appealing looking despite the grade. I'm guessing there's some degree of back damage keeping the grade down.
I'm in awe. I'll say it sells for $65,000.

The only other Mathewson that I know about is the one that Andy used to own.
A E107 Honus Wagner sold for $134,000, a E107 Delahanty sold for $74,000, and a E107 Cy Young sold for $72,000. It is hard to predict with these types of cards, but I am guessing that the Mathewson will cost more than Cy Young and Ed Delahanty.

Easily 6 figures. It's a cornerstone card for any collection.
I know of at least 3 Mattys and have been told there are at least 5.

Hey Wes, do you recall the grades on the Wagner/Delahanty/Young cards?
Looks like I underestimated the Matty price big time. Easily 6 figures in today's economy? Yeesh.

Wagner SGC 40 VG (Mastro)
Young SGC 40 VG (Mastro)
Delahanty SGC 10 Poor (Huggins)
I have to agree with Jay, in that it is likely that the Mathewson will sell for over $100,000. The economy is bad but that has not affected the prices for marquee card like T206 Wagner, BN Ruth, T210 Jackson, etc. There is no question the E107 Mathewson is in that category, as it is one of the two keys to the set.

if the e107 Matty sells for over $100k, I wonder if that will drive up
prices for other e107 HOFer's? Should a Matty really be worth 20 times
what another HOFer like Clarke or Bender might sell for?
ps - if it sells for $45k, drinks on me at the next National, I'll be showing off my new Matty rookie!

Matty and Wagner, aside from being the cornerstone of set, are also among the toughest cards in the set. Consensus seems to be that there are 5 or fewer of each. Plank and many other HOFers are much more plentiful, hence a 20x price difference should be out of the question.

Agreed. Which is why I think the $72,000 someone paid for the SGC 40 Young is a crazy price, considering Young is among the more common HOFers in the set. If a Young can yield that kind of sum, then 6 figures on that Matty wouldn't surprise me all that much.
Another super tough E107 HOFer is Chance. I'd say it belongs in the same scarcity tier as Wagner, Matty, and several others.
Re: E107 Christy Mathewson in Mastro
Talk about underestimating... I guess my $45K estimate was so far off base that others are joking about how they would be partying if they were able to buy it for "that little." Yikes is right! Someday I hope to have that much collateral around to consider a $45K steal. It will definitely be an interesting auction to watch. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Re: E107 Christy Mathewson in Mastro
I think the neat set that Mastro auctioned back around 2002 included a Matty and Wagner. That group went into a collection that won't be sold any time soon.

Re: E107 Christy Mathewson in Mastro
so there are at least 4 documented mattys??? if jay's memory is correct. this one up in dec, andy baran's old matty from the lipset lot, jay's 2002 mastro, and john spencer's old EX+(!!!). with the recent sales of the delahanty i was surprised the wagner 40 went "so" low. i say this matty won't break 100k but it'll be around there ~90k.

All the numbers that we see on the website for the live auction are just the minimum bids. In this case, $25000 is the minimum opening bid. There are currently ten proxy bids, but the website does not display the proxy bids.
Anybody flying to NYC for the live auction?

I am a big Matty fan. Plus the 1914 CJ is on Joe Orlando's Top 200 Sportscard list.

I guess there will be no drinks on Jeff in Cleveland next year. Any word on who got it or did it go to "an anonymous collector"?
