PSA, SGC or ...
This may be an old topic for you veterans...
Which grading service do you think is preferred, best, most credible, etc.?

You will probably find that most people here prefer SGC as the their standards are far superior to any other slabber and the cards look great in their holders.

i am not a veteran,
but i prefer SGC but without a doubt PSA seems to bring in more $ for the same card in an equal holder. I bet its the registry set.

not neccessarily true with pre-ww2 cards. The only exceptions are what you mentioned, popular sets in the regestry like t206 and 33 Goudey. Beyond those few, SGC gets as good or better prices than PSA.

High grade Goudeys pricing is pretty close now, with plenty of examples of SGC outselling PSA.
With SGC, there are just fewer surprises, which is good for the collector. Who here likes getting a PSA 6 card with paper loss on the front? I sure don't, but I'm no longer shocked when it happens. IMO, Joe Orlando and PSA really fumbled the strangle-hold they had in the hobby.

No one mentioned Beckett. How do they fit in?

Beckett does a nice job, but until I find a reason to change from SGC, they are my grader of choice. No card looks better in the holder than SGC, they do a nice job of grading and the customer service is great.

For purposes of storage it appears the SGC and PSA holders are similar in size. Can someone confirm the differences?

Beckett Holders=Thickest
SGC Holders=Thick
PSA Holders=Small and flimsy

PSA holders are the thinnest, but I wouldn't call them flimsy. The thinner the holders are, while still protecting the card, the better IMO. It takes up a lot of space to store a T206 set graded...and that small difference in the holders really adds up.

Whatever you do, don't go to CSA or any other immitations. CSA is know for grading trimmed cards at an overated grade. This card is definitly trimmed:
If I had to choose, I would go with SGC.

I like the better presentation of cards in SGC holders since the SG Cholders have nice black gaskets. But I also like the less bulky PSA holders which are easier to store..
As far as resale value, both SGC and PSA are about the same.

Oh gee, I feel like I'm on the outside, looking in here.
But I think that all slabs are too bulky and too costly.
Of course, if you are about to sell a card, it may be financially advantageous to have it slabbed.
But if you are just enjoying it, toploaders or binder pages work efficiently.
And if that is not sufficiently robust for you, PRO holders can not be beat.
Of course, you have to ignore the grade, but the holders are polycarbonate and thereby minimize UV damage to the card.

The only reason I have cards slabbed that I keep in my collection is to protect the cards from me. Even though my collection is full of beaters, there is no sense in letting any more damage happen to them.
