Here are mine:

1. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (1973).

IMO the best album ever recorded in any genre. Just a masterpiece in sound engineering and songwriting. Has to be heard from start to finish. It's also the 6th highest selling album of all time.

2. Led Zeppelin - IV (1971).

Great songs. Great variety of sound. "Stairway" is an obvious classic, but you also have "Black Dog", "Rock and Roll", "The Battle of Evermore", "Going to California", and all the rest. Not one weak track. Amazing album that I rarely listen to anymore because I played it endlessly in my teens. Still has to be on the list though.

3. The Doors - LA Woman (1971).

Near the end of Morrison's life, the Doors still put out what is, imo, their best record. Combining elements of rock and R&B, this is their hardest hitting record. Morrison puts out a great performance despite his addictions and other demons that eventually lead to his death prior to the album's US release.

4. Metallica - Master of Puppets (1986).

Ok so maybe not your typical rock album. It's thrash metal. The essential album of my youth. But this isn't your run of the mill headbanger metal album. The songs are crafted masterfully with excellent playing, multi layered harmony, and a whole lot of energy. Also the final album with their brilliant basist Cliff Burton in the band, who died tragically in a bus accident during a European tour that year. Not for everyone, but if you like heavier music, this is the best example of it ever created IMO.

5. The Tea Party - Edges of Twilight (1995).

A rock album that combines numerous elements from music around the world, from Zep/Doors influenced rock to traditional Indian and Middle-Eastern instrumentation. Probably not many here have heard it, but this is an incredible album. I've seen these guys live 4 times and it's easily the best live show I've ever seen.

So how about yours? If you'd prefer just to list them without the summaries that's cool too. I just like to have a little fun doing these top 5 lists Razz

I was actually thinking about doing this type of thread while at work a few days ago. They are generally called "desert island" threads where you are asked if you could only have 3-5 albums/books/movies with you on a desert island, what would they be.

#1 - London Calling by The Clash
The absolute best punk rock album of all time by the best punk rock band of all time. You can't ask for much more.

#2 - The Wall by Pink Floyd
Absolutely amazing with a great storyline. Combined with the movie, just stunning.

#3 - 1999 by Prince
The Minnesota boy dun good. A great party album

#4 - The Party Album by Vengaboys
As the title implies, it's a great party album. The songs are very dancable and so sachrine sweet that your teeth will rot. This is the epitome of bubble gum techno.

#5 - Destroyer by Kiss
Gotta have that metal fix

What are your top 5 rock albums of all time? Empty good choices

I'd agree with your first three picks Ben. Before thinking about it too much, I would definitely add Who's Next from 1971. Actually, 1971 had to be one of the greatest years of all time for music- as it also provided two of my other favorites--Low Spark of High Heeled Boys by Traffic, and Aqualung by Jethro Tull (plus Live at Fillmore East by the Allman Bros.)

Here's my Top 5 (in no particular order):

1) Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

2) Metallica: And Justice for All (1988)

3) Mudvayne: LD 50 (2000)

4) Alice in Chains: Dirt (1992)

5) Rage Against the Machine: Self Titled first album (1992)

I could also put Black Sabbath's Paranoid album (1971 in the US) in my list. Fairies Wear Boots is my favorite Black Sabbath song.

Well, classic rock has been a big part of my life, it would be hard for me to pick 5. But I'll give it a go.

  • Trapeze: Medusa (1970) Great short lived band, Glenn Hughes voice is best in Rock IMO
  • Hendrix: Band of Gypsy's (1970) Just a great Hendrix live album from the Fillmore with Buddy Miles
  • Grand Funk Railroad: Self Titled, The Red Album (1969) Saw them in Long Beach arena Mar. 1970, have never been the same
  • Led Zepplin: Self Titiled, The first album (1969) Wore out about 6 of these albums, couldn't believe what I was hearing in 69
  • Cream: Disraeli Gears (1967) Just a great album, Love Jack Bruce's vocals.

Dark Side of the Moon would have made my list but didn't want to be repetitive

Honorable Mention
Tull: Benefit
ZZ Top: Tres Hombres
Doors: Morrison Hotel
Black Sabbath: Paranoid
Deep Purple: Machine head
The Who: Live at Leeds
Beatles: Revolver
etc. etc. etc.

Hate leaving the Rolling Stones, Who, Kinks, Jethro Tull, & Aerosmith off the list...

I love Oingo Boingo. Personally, I think Only a Lad is their best work.

I was lucky enough back in 1983 on New Years Eve to meet and party with Danny Elfman and the guys from the band. I had showed to their show early at the Warfield in SF. I got to talking with this older guy about the band and music in general. After talking for awhile, he asked me if I wanted to go backstage and meet the band. Needless to say, I said yes.

A week later I was reading the SF Chronicle and the entertainment section had an article about concert promoter Bill Graham (I had never heard of him prior to that article). The older guy that I was talking was Bill Graham affraid I had no clue who I was talking to at the time. I had him as a client in my limo in 1991 shortly before his death. I mentioned that we had met before. He thought a few moments and said it must have been the New Years Oingo Boingo show at the Warfield. I was floored he even remember.

grew up in the 90's so i didn't get cultured to alot of old stuff (since most people i knew are of asian descent)...but just pulled out my cds recently and i listened to these 5 the most in my college years.

Pearl Jam--Vs
love it alot more raw and angst than their debut 10...my fav all time band.

Better than Ezra--Deluxe
poppy and melodic...fun and upbeat a nice diversion from all the grunge i was listening to.

Radiohead--OK Computer
love it...i don't usually listen to a cd beginning to end but this was great.

Supergrass--In it for the Money
Off the wall Brit rock/pop

Smashing Pumpkins--Siamese Dream
hey who doesn't love Billy Corgan? or Disarm? or Today??? A staple of 90's rock on all the stations.

Honorable Mention.
KROQ Kevin and Bean Last Christmas 1999 Edition
Just a funny cd with some Xmas covers by various rockbands and funny bits...always cheer me up.

also did cd's die alot faster than vinyls? who would've seen that coming?

Siamese Dream is a good record, but Billy Corgan is a douchebag. I "met" him in Prague in '97, asked for an autograph and got "screw off, kid" as a response. Nobody else recognized him really, he was hanging around at the town square listening to the orchestra play (which it does daily) and I asked politely! James Iha was nice though.

However I must agree that Disarm is a sweet song.

BTW Corgan is really tall and has a huge pumpkin head. His head was shaved bald at the time I saw him so it was even more striking.

Oh the Supergrass record is the best...I've spent a few
early mornings going to bed with that record playing and the sun rising.

I used to be an audio engineer and have work/met some interesting people in my
short career (19 - 25 and now I'm 30). Mudvayne was interesting, it was
"the End of All Things to Come," and I was working at a bar in Cannon
Falls, MN (where Pachyderm Studio is) and they would come in at midnight every
night and drink $300 in booze in an hour (4 guys), I would close up and we would
head out to the studio to listen to the record. A few times we would head
out on Saturday morning to play some golf, nothing like showing up to the club
with a few of those guys. Really nice, just a little strange to the
general public.

Anyway, my top five records in particular order:

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Pulp - Different Class
Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (Strawberry Field Forever is the most amazing
song - you can tell Ringo was a great drummer in that one)
Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
Nirvana - In Utero
