Re: ROUNDS 1-24 (merged)
The Riddlers announce our pride: Ross Barnes, SS has joined the club.
Card image courtesy of Patrick Preece
Ross may have been the greatest hitter to have ever graced a diamond. But he took ill following his sixth season, and did not recover, however, he continued to try to play in his weakened condition for three additional seasons, before ending his career.
His contemporaries verify "He is simply that much better than everyone else" And his statistics are awe inspiring: four .400+ seasons in six years of professional play, encompassing both the National Association and National League. Overall six year BA = .397. Hit with power.
Following this six years of play he was unable to achieve a batting average above .272 during his three seasons in a severely weakened condition. Of course, these seasons are part of his statistics too. Their inclusion reduces his lifetime average almost 40 points to a mortal .359.
In his better years Ross would use his bat with the surgical precision of an expert billiards player, hitting vicious line drives (as Keeler would later say) “where they aint”, and he was also adept at taking advantage of the rule not requiring a batted ball to pass the base in fair territory, by slicing the ball or chopping it to bound off in foul ground having initially bounced in fair territory.
Most of his professional career was spent in the National Association, but to dispel consideration that his performance is therefore tainted, his transition to the National League is marked by his initial NL batting average being .429
4 of 6 seasons hitting over .400 is true. But it is also true that the NA seasons were short and he only typically got 300 at bats per year.
Love him or hate him, Ross Barnes is the start of the second wave in the Riddler’s offense. In his capacity of batting fifth, it is his job to clean up any stragglers remaining after the bunters, hitters, runners and the sluggers from the top of the order are finished with their play, so that run scoring progress can resume. And he is followed by others who also hit for average and with power in the undisciplined attack in the bottom half of the Riddler assault force.

The Riddlers Medieval B.B.C.
*********************************
We regret to inform you that an unforseen tragedy has resulted in the loss of our No.1 pinchhitter and our shortstop for the season.
Pujols and Barnes are hereby placed on the disabled list and will not appear in any games. All I can tell you at this time is that this decision was originated in the offices of League Management.
ItsOnly now puts on his surgical gloves and reaches way into the Cork and Juice League to extract item identified as Sammy Sosa. "We will hang this one out back on the wash line for a few weeks to dry out, so he don't slide off the bench and injure himsef when he sits down", he says before he runs off into the dusk in search of a Star to replace Barnes.
Ok, team.
Nap: listen up!
You are going to have to step up here.
I knew this kind of thing could happen. That is why you were my third round choice.
Nobody's going to like the new guy, he doesn't hit as good a a pitcher.
And he wears a big glove for catching the ball. He kinda swoops them up.
And no, he does not have a propeller in his cap.
I know you like Herman Long, but this guy, Ozzie Smith is my choice.
Nap - he is going to run you ragged. He is smooth and he expects to make the double play every time.
Smith bats no. 8, Nap takes the wave II lead.
And team - we are this good. We can suffer this loss and still beat them! You will come to like Ozzie.
