Good Baseball Books
What are some good baseball books that you have read or are reading. I'm reading "The Old Ball Game" by Frank Deford. It's about how Mathewson and Magraw created modern baseball. These guys are exact opposites of eachother. Very good book

Re: Good Baseball Books
I treat baseball books as reference sources. Almost all have some useful information.
What qualities do you value in a baseball book?

Re: Good Baseball Books
I like things broken down by season too.
Actually, that is what I collect: cards which commemorate season highlights.
For example -
in 1884: the White Stockings hit more HRs than anyone else ever had, and they kept that record for more than 40 years, until the 1927 Yankees broke it.
and in 1884 eight pitchers won 40 or more games
and in 1884 the Union Association was formed as a escape from the Reserve Clause
and in 1884 13 pitchers recorded more than 300 strikeouts (four had >400)
and in 1884, due to Union Association teams not making it, many replacement teams were started up. One, St. Pauls, only lasted for nine games - the shortest lived team ever.
A book that tells you this kind of stuff about teams 1900-present (almost) is the Baseball Chronicle by David Nemec, and others

If this is not what you meant, please clarify.

Re: Good Baseball Books
i read game of shadows and emeral age of baseball (ed delahanty) over the new year and surprisingly i found GOS about bonds/balco fascinating. i guess i find myself more connected with the modern game/issues and it was an easier read. also google and wiki helped me get more informed about HGH and the various steroids/masking agents out there.

Primitive Baseball
Never on Sundays

No gary that doesn't count. Adding on to my preferences, I like books that tell sories that tell about a season or era of baseball and that is packed with info. Not encyclopedias.
