New guy

Post by deadballfreak on Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:55 pm

Hello. New guy here. I'm a card nut from way back. I remember buying a few packs as early as 1960/61. At age 10 in 1964 I went all in. My dad couldn't have a nickle in his pocket without me begging him out of it to buy another pack. I wound up about 15-20 cards short of a set (I couldn't get Willie Mays or Pete Rose to save my ass and the 7th series distribution was almost nil).

I kept it up until I was about 15 and girls became more important than cardboard. In my mid 20s I got back in and I was in and out for several years due to life. I was lucky enough to grab some good cards back in the 70s and started getting really serious about 15 years ago.

Money has zero to do with why I collect. I LOVE BASEBALL! Loved to play. Love the history. Love to argue about strategy. Love everything about it. Therefore I collect everything, but the deadball era is my main love. I am at 518 in the monster and not likely to advance much beyond that. I am into caramel, Goudeys, Play Ball, Topps, Bowman, you name it. No direction. It might be a hoarding disease.

Anyway, I'm 58, live in Southern Illinois, rabid Cardinal fan. I stumbled across this board a week ago and have been fascinated by the knowledge you guys have. I don't know how much I can contribute, but I will probably express some opinions anyway and ask some stupid questions. My name is Ken. Nickname maddog. Glad to be here!

welcome aboard Ken!!!!!! The more addicted...hoarders of old cardboard to hang with...the better!!!!!

Me...43...started collecting in mid 70's...mainly 50's-70's with some vintage...t206's, goudeys in there. I sold my collection to replace the car I wrecked when I was 17...got back into it in college...after wasting thousands of $$$$ on early 90's crap...strictly vintage...I've sold off 90% of my t206...and am thinning my collection to select caramels, tobaccos...and hof'ers!

My Mom threw out some stuff. Really. Never understood why a couple of shoe boxes were so offensive. She chucked a 69 Topps set into the trash and burned it. I had to hide my cards after that in an old barn with a dirt floor. I still haven't replaced the 69 set. Maybe 60 short.

I am scarred to this day. When I found out about it I went to dig through the trash barrel. It was horrible. Rico Carty, Dal Maxvill, etc. all crispy critters.

It was a good looking set I think. After that I couldn't get into 1970. Could be because of a girl. That was my last year of buying packs and working towards the set.

I think that 88 Topps was the first truly lame set. 84 Topps had the Mattingly rookie, classic card. 85 Topps Gooden, Clemens... 86 Black borders... I could even go 87 Topps with the wood and Will Clark RC. But the 88 design was real bland. By 89 there was Upper Deck and that really put an end to the Topps intrigue.

Never met a real life Cardinal fan, I don't think, but they are supposed to be the best fans in the game. As passionate as Bosox fans but polite instead of A-holes. Welcome to the board. I don't have much of a wealth of knowledge of cards personally, but there are folks on here who do. I just chime in with a bunch of nonsense occasionally. Very Happy

PS I'm an Old Judge collector.

In retrospect, Jamie...I agree with you...88' topps was very lame and started a trend. I stopped collecting after 82...personally!

Welcome Ken,

1969 was a great year for Topps, although due to contract problems with the MLBPA there were several cards that re-used old photographs and just re-cropped (e.g. Aaron, Banks, Carew). It was the first set I ever completed, although it is long since gone. I remember the great year Reggie was having that season and pulled exactly one of his rookie cards--it came with a noticeable 1" crease right out of the pack and I never saw another one Sad.

It was also the end of an era--cards went up to a dime a pack in 1970 (oh the horror!). I remember the sticker shock as though it were yesterday, going to the store with my quarter to buy the obligatory five packs and instead getting stuck with a leftover nickel. And my first pack contained doubles of Charlie Metro, some old fart I'd never heard of managing an expansion team and shown with an airbrushed cap on a drab gray card that lacked color-coordinated team references like the ones that I had grown used to seeing over the prior 4 years-- my first four years of collecting. Also a complete lack of effort on the script rather than block player names, as if some lackey just took a pen and hand-wrote them. ICK. I can easily understand why you got turned off of cards that year, although the girl thing is probably a better explanation-- I'm a few years younger than you so that didn't hit me for a few more years.

Welcome aboard. We are all enablers for the problem.

I've been collecting as a kid since 1969 and got into vintage cards in 1980 when my brother (bowlingshoeguy) went to the annual Thunderbird show in Twin Cities. I'm a jack of all trades. Know a little about just about everything in the hobby. Had some good teachers in Mark Macrae, Bill Bosert and Ron Oser. Sold my original collection in the early 90s and sucked back in about 10 years later when my brother decided to start collecting t202s. Since coming back I've transistioned through a few hobby foci. Started working a t207 set. Then it became a "player" set where I wante done card of everyone that appeared on a card as a major leaguer. Then it was working on a the Delong and t205 set. Then I started up a business selling BBQ sauce and chicken wing sauce. Sold most of the collection and now have the "Gang of 10". I currently limiting my collection to 10 cards.

Don't be shy and feel free to start topics on anything you like.
