1890's Buck Ewing Ohio CDV?

Hello, I acquired this today at a estate sale and don't know much about it. It measures 4 x 2 1/2 in. I would like to sell the card or find any info i can about it. Oh, I know those! That card is obviously a joke card about Ewing's propensity to get injured as he was beginning to age. As far as I can tell, the card seems to be authentic. It could be in Very Good condition, perhaps, which means it is probably one of the better examples out there. I don't know how much it is worth, but it is probably north of $1000, somewhere in the $2000 range, perhaps.

Most important thing is to be very careful with the condition of the card and any damage to the card will greatly affect its value. You should consider consigning the card to an auction house in order to maximize its value. The auctioneer will have the card authenticated and graded by SGC. P.S. It may not be worth as much as I wrote before, the card is rather obscure. Can just depend on what someone is willing to pay for it that day. Maybe someone else here knows better...

I am skeptical. Although I haven't regularly chased 19th century stuff for many years and am far far from an expert, I find it odd that having never seen this image all that time I now have seen it three times this month. First there was the Heritage auction ending May 2, which contained the following and included within the description "A portrait of this style was unknown to our staff"


Then there was this ebay auction ending May 17th with what it acknowledges is a reprint

and now this one. I'd have to see it in hand to pass judgment, but I find the timing of all this to be very strange.

If you fully enlarge the image you will see a small line of soiling below his chin and on his collar, running downward right to left toward the armsling. This same soiling appears in the reprint and also seems to exist on the OPs specimen. Also, the Heritage description notes a small piece of paper adhered to Buck's right pant leg (actually his left--right as you're looking at it). Seems to be on the lower knee area to me. Also seems like this similar blemish or small whitish blotch is found on the reprint and the OP's example, although it's not as easy to see as the collar soiling. I'm having more and more trouble believing this is authentic.

looks kinda fake to me...paper looks artifically aged...image is not super clear...

from the scans my first thought was fake. The image is far too grainy. You just don't see photos from that era look grainy.

imo first impression seeing it it's too "colorful" for something supposedly came from the 19th century...usually the period stuff is very drabby and sepia and/or b/w.
