Chris Sullivan E107 Collection?

Post by fisherboy7 on Wed Jul 18, 2012 4:39 am

Apparently I live under a rock, as I stumbled on an article that said Legendary sold off one of the largest E107 collections recently and I didn't hear a thing about it?? Legendary deemed it "the most extensive e107 collection ever offered". I've never even heard of Chris Sullivan.

Can anyone provide some details about the collection ie. how extensive/overall condition/hofers and rarities included?

Link I stumbled across:

I know of Chris Sullivan, his amazing near-set collection of E107s, and heard that it was going to be on display in Baltimore, but I didn't hear that it was sold.

I have no idea, I just stumbled across that link last night while looking at some e107 scans on google (e107 is my porn) It would make sense that I haven't heard about it because it hasn't happened yet...duhhhhh, nice one Fisher mallet

Can't wait to see what's contained in the collection!

My understanding is that Legendary is looking to sell the collection en masse. It has some amazingly high grade cards (for the issue) in it. It is a near set and is missing only the Lajoie from the HOFers. It is missing some team variations as well. I don't have notes with me from my conversation with them, but I think the collection had somewhere around 148 cards in it. (don't quote me on that number though... it is just a ballpark figure from memory)

It will be on display in Baltimore. If it is sold already, I wouldn't expect Legendary to announce that information before the show. There'd be no reason to limit the number of people coming over to their display tables.

Thanks for the info Brian. So, Legendary is displaying the collection at the national, and will be auctioning it off at a later date? Doesn't appear to be included in their next auction.

Interesting that Lajoie is the only HOFer not present - I've always seen Lajoie as one of the easier ones. Will be awesome to see some of the super tough HOFers like Chance, Wallace, and of course Big Ed, Matty and Honus.

Speaking of E107 HOFers - I was wondering - has anyone ever seen a copy of an E107 Wallace? I don't think I have even seen a scan of one. Wallace would get my vote for the toughest HOF'er...

I've never found Lajoie to be easy, but have only owned 1. If you know where I can find another one, I'd be happy to pick it up!

Chance, Wallace, Hanlon, Davis, and the big ones are all represented - save the Lajoie. I believe the Wagner and Matty represent the highest graded examples. They did not show all the cards in that image. (I would've expected a few different cards in the image too.)

To repeat... these cards are NOT in their next auction because they are looking to sell them "privately" as a set. Regardless of whether they are already spoken for or not, I wouldn't expect any news of a sale prior to Baltimore.

not mine...

Wallace is certainly up there... along with Chance and Hanlon. I don't have my notes with me, but as memory serves, those are three of the toughest - at least according to pop reports.

Never seen a Wallace or Chance for sale before either. I believe I saw one Hanlon in an old Mastro auction but that's it. Kelley is also tough.

Here's a scan with some of the aforementioned toughies:

Interesting that the Wallace is the same pose as the 206 portrait.

Are Cincinnati players tough overall in the 107 set? Beckley and Kelley are both high on the difficulty list, and I can't remember seeing too many other Cincy players out there for sale either.

Very interesting Chris, I think there's definitely some plausibility to that theory. This Poole is another tough Cinci card, sold last year in a Goodwin auction for 2.7k. You see way more of the A's cards for example (H. Davis, Plank, Waddell, Hartsell, Cross, etc) than you do Cinci, no doubt.

Also a quirky looking pose on the Poole, I think he was sitting on the low stool for the photoshoot! Smile Pretty fancy pinstripe suit and tie though.

I think the Poole went so high because it is such an odd card - not necessarily because he is tough.

I have an hypothesis that the vignette-imaged ones (such as Chance, Hanlon, and McGraw above) are tougher than the average cards. When I say vignette, I am talking about the edges of the photo - not extending to the border. I haven't researched it, but every vignette one that I've come across seemed to be tough.

Chris Sullivan has been collecting this set for quite awhile. I first came across his name on EBay back in the mid-2000's. He would occasionally put low grade E107's up for auction. I think he also used to sell some N172's as well. I remember that he lived a couple of towns over from me when I lived in the Cape Cod area. I just received the Legendary catalog today and the E107's in his collection are unreal.

If you look up to the scans I posted of the Hanlon and Mcgraw, you'll see they are in great shape. Pete Calderon had a bunch of those scans on his old caramel-cards website. Bunches of HOFers, all in similar condition to those ones. I assume they all came from the same place. I'm very curious to see if those cards are from the Sullivan collection, because I've never seen one for sale in the time I've been tracking them.

I never had a Hanlon, but here is what my "less than mint" McGraw looked like.

I remember back around 2002 or '03 a near master set was auctioned by mastro that 148 different cards. Are these those cards? I thought KO had bought group.

Re: Chris Sullivan E107 Collection?

Post by jbonie on Thu Jul 19, 2012 9:18 pm

It is a private sale so I just wonder if the asking price is going to be way above market value- not that market value is easy to define for these cards, but one can get a gist based on what lower grade copies have sold for. If so, that would make it more of a "Buy It Now" type of sale. I wonder, if it is a private sale, why not put asking prices in the catalog?

I understand that releasing them all onto the market at the same time creates liquidity concerns. But it's hard for me to trust anything outside of a regular auction format. Not that I am a player or in the market for E107's, which are impressive cards but not my thing personally.

Don't forget the ton of cash that accompanied the T206 Wagner.

Given the straight up choice, I'd rather have the E107s. Go figure.
That said, Scott did pretty well for himself, IMO.

That was one beautiful looking T206 Wagner though. I'd think it is a candidate for an SGC 35.

Well I went down to the mailbox today and got the catalog for Legendary's auction at the National, and low and behold there was a seperate, smaller, book included dedicated solely to the E107s.

It is one of the most beautifully produced booklets I've ever received and will definitely be avoiding the scrap heap.

Definitely one of the most amazing groupings of cards I've seen put together.

In response to Quan's post, I'd rather have these E107s than the Wagner.

and if I could pick one out for keeps, I think I'd go ... Hanlon!
