Chris, a N172 manager subset would be a fun (and completable) goal yes especially since you already have the Wright out of the way.

Would be a sight to see if they all had strong images.

Fantastic contrast on that image!

According to Miller and Masson's OJ book, there are three poses of "Truthful Jim" Mutrie - namely,

  • 336-1 Portrait, bard head, looking/L
  • 336-2 Seated, bowler hat in R/hand
  • 336-3 Standing, bowler hat on head

The interesting thing to me is that your portrait is slightly different than the one in the book. Not only is the a slight difference in the Old Judge advertisement, but the name plate is also slightly different. The one in the book spells out New York instead of abbreviating it. So many different nuances in OJs!

Here is the image from the book. It's a must have for any serious OJ collector.

Edited to note that the book version shows writing on his right shoulder. Looking under a loop, it says "Copyright ____ Goodwin & Co ____" (I can't make out the underlined parts, but it is most likely a year.)

Great info Brian - I hadn't checked the card against my copy of the OJ book.

I guess this card can be considered a new variation - there are three distinct differences when compared to the copy in the Miller/Masson book. The nameplate difference, the abbreviation of "New York" and my copy of the card has the copyright info scratched out on the negative.

I don't know if it makes my card any more valuable per se, but it is amazing to find a new variation in the Old Judge set...

Come on Chris, you are being too humble. You know OJs well enough that variations are huge for that handful that are working on a master set. You now have a 'must have' card. Could be great trade bait.

I don't think that those types of variations make the card more valuable - it is fairly normal for n172's to vary like that. Nevertheless, it seems to be at the very least a scarce pose and rarely seen for auction. Nice contrast, too.

Kind of what I thought too Jamie - I think you need some difference to the photo (no matter how minor) before people stand up and take notice of it.

That said, I feel like I have seen differences in the team name be considered as a variation. Regardless, I am really excited to have this one in my collection.

Chris, nice OJ. It seems yours is a "first edition", published a year before the one depicted in the book.

Nice Carey too, although now you're just showing off. It feels like I haven't added an m101-6 to my collection in forever, yet you keep running into them. Must be nice.

Great image on that OJ. It seems like all the OJs from that ebay seller have stellar images. I picked up a few myself (when I had the luck to not being outbid by Keith O.)

Goin' to town on the commons lately. Nothing notable, really (and far from the best pics in history), but it feels good to have the T's rolling again. It sat dormant for awhile, but I'm now officially 35% of the way there on a 'Subjects Only' set!

Ending the month on a HOF note. Looking forward to seeing who else scored anything from the PWCC auction this week. Some of those Turkeys looked fantastic. Good luck, prospective bidders!
