Collecting aspirations for 2012
My goal for this year is to finish off my Delong set. Down to Cochrane, Hafey, Traynor, Goslin and Simmons.
Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
I was disappointed in my w514 set acquisition this past year. Only got 18 cards, but they included Joe Jackson, Miller Huggins, Zach Wheat, and Max Carey. I will continue to work on the set this year, but my initial hopes for a quick resolution to this has been problematic. Oh well.
My top priority this year has little to do with baseball card collecting, but may interest some on the board. I've been steadily working on a book about Jimmy Claxton and hope to have it done by the end of the year.

A Few on my Radar
As I am not a typical set collector, I tend to focus on individual cards. Here are a few that I hope to acquire in 2012:
1. 1933 Butter Cream "Pepper Martin
2. 1-2 T5 HOFers
3. D304 Eddie Collins (any back is fine)
4. 1959 Bazooka Ken Boyer
5. M101-6 Frank Baker
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and a great collecting year in 2012.

Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
Many of my goals from 2011 will filter into 2012...I will continue to look for the last few e94's I need to complete the set...an e98 orange jennings...an e97 nichols phil variation...and whatever I decide to drunk-buy from REA this spring!!!
Additionally I will continue to go through my house and get rid of anything I absolutely don't have to keep...in my quest to downsize and simplify my life!

I would love to find the E270 Red Border Cravath, not sure what else but I have nothing but time!
Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
Hey Jeff.....sent you a PM regarding one of the cards on your wantlist.
As for me, I don't have too many aspirations for 2012. Find a 1912 Boston Garter is the one. Other than that, maybe do some selling of my lower grade stuff and pick up a bargain or two here and there.

Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
my goal is to acquire Jeff's Monarch Bender.
and if that doesn't happen, then something equally as cool.

Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
I am hoping to acquire as many M101-6's as I can find (anyone got some to sell or trade?) and continue to pick up Old Judge managers and portrait cards, as well as any OJ card with extremely bold images.
I also probably will sell some of my other cards and narrow my focus to 19th century stuff and just one or two 20th century sets. I have too many cards that don't really fit any particular niche in my collection.

Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
I am seriously rethinking my collection and going the route of another collector I know. His collection is only 10 cards and if he finds card that he wants, he has to sell one of the 10 off. Given that I just don't seem to have the desire to chase sets anymore, a small, manageable collection seems the best route to go.
Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
I like that concept, Jay...I think about doing that too...but my rules would count...for example...an e94 set as 1 item!

I thought of going that route with Delongs but they are going to go.
Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
My goals for 2012 are to finish my T210-2 Richmond Colt Subset and hopefully in the process pick up another 1/3 of the set this year. Also to continue to plug away on my T206 HOF Master Set.

I currently own five cards, I would like to get a sixth but that would be it. I prefer it because I can focus on much nicer stuff that way. Delahanty, Ewing, Kelly, etc... I could never afford those guys if I decided to chase every card in the set.

Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
I've got my 10 cards I am keeping:
m101-5 Thorpe
t215 Jennings (Louisiana Find)
e92 Nadja Oakes
t205 Cobb
t205 Joss
t205 Johnson
t205 Matty
e92 Dockman Mathewson
Delong Gehrig
e270 red Speaker (already earmarked for another collector when I decide to sell)
The only untouchables on the list are the Thorpe, Jennings and Oakes. The rest will be sold when I get cards I would rather have than those or an offer I can't refuse. First card I need to add to the Gang of 10 is a 19c HOFer.

Pete, my full name a secret. Don't blow it. I've completed the set before, so it's not exactly like it was something on my bucket list.

It's cool that you're branching into 19c material.

Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
The Delong set, along with the t205 set are two of my all-time favorite sets. I'd rather chase a set I like and have completed before than chase a set that doesn't appeal to me.
Re: Collecting aspirations for 2012
The deed is done. My entire collection except for the 10 cards I am keeping (and my childhood cards) are now part of the upcoming REA auction.
