T206 Drum vs. Uzit vs. Broadleaf 460

Post by fisherboy7 on Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:32 pm

How do these three backs stack up in terms of rarity, with recent finds accounted for? When I first got into prewar, many considered Uzit to be the rarest, but there have been several significant Uzit finds since then. I've always been in the Drum camp myself. When do you ever see Drum HOFers for sale?

Anyone have some reliable numbers on the three backs?

I have no data...But...I'd rank BL 460 the toughest...followed by Drum then Uzit.

When I entered the hobby Drum was considered the toughest...I don't think BL 460 was very well known...certainly not to me.

It seems aside from scattered examples of these rare backs...many are hidden in hoarders collections thereby virtually controlling the prices of these gems...in my opinion.

I don't think anyone except die card collectors and weirdos like myself cared about every possible back prior to about the mid 90s. In the late 80s when I was trying to compile data on every back type everyone thought I was nuts and said no one cares about the difference between factory numbers, etc on the back.

Good for you Jay, do you have that data you compiled in the 80's? Could provide intersting insights into our rare back discussion.

Ben, I wish I did. When I got out of the hobby I went full tilt and threw out all my books and notes. Price guides, references, everything. Wish I had it now but I need to make a clean brake with nothing to draw me back in. The only cards that survived the sell off where the ones I had put between the pages of books.

Even back in the 80s I always felt that Drums were harder to find that Uzits.

I picked up my one and only drum...which I no longer own...in 1992-3...at a show in silver spring, md for $30. At this time I was trying to complete a back run. I had never seen a uzit back in person...but I was offered some w/hof'ers on the reverso by some guy on a prodigy message board...but they were out of my price range. At about the same time I picked up a nice lenox which I recently sold...and in 94' while interviewing for dental schools I picked up 1 of 3 red hindu's I owned at the time.

To put things in perspective I had never even seen a tolstoi back in person...and I grossly overpaid for the first one I saw at a show. Similarly I'd pick up any(which amounted to 3) carolina brights backs I could find.

It was much harder to find these backs back then before the internet really took off.

I do remember being offered a bl 460 at the ft washington show in 95' but $350 was way out of my budget.

For some reason my old t206 collection had an inordinate number of CBs and Tolstois. I much preferred ABs and their green backs. Had a really nice Matty an AB back

Drums used to be more rare than Uzits but there was a large Drum find a couple of years ago that doubled the population of Drums and now I think Uzits are a bit more rare. The Drum find was I believe sold by Legendary. Although Uzits are cool, Drums seem to most capture people's imagination. They are sweet backs.

There was a recent Uzit find as well...I still believe drums to be tougher...but if so...not by much!

The Uzit find was 96 cards if I remember correctly. I think was also another find of 40 or 50. I don't think there has been a Drum find as big as that 96 card lot.

It sounds to me like the Broadleaf 460s are by far the toughiest. My 12 years on ebay I think I have seen maybe a dozen Broadleaf 460s, but plenty of Uzit and Drums.

I did not realize the true rarity of the Broadleaf 460s until the fellow put up (I believe 5) some on ebay with a $250 BIN. Needless to say they did not last long.

By the way, living in MN was not a hot spot for T2206s in the 80's and 90's. I think the toughest back I was able to pick up was a Tolstoi and EPDG.

The thing about the BL460's is that I view them more as a number variation than a rare back and therefore I prefer the Uzits and Drums. You really have to be into factory# variations to like the BL460's.

For a basic T206 backs set...Jamie's way of thinking is fine...but if you're hardcore...then you've got to go for the factory/series variations too!
