Set of the Week: Newsboy cabinets (N566)
Newsboy cabinets were issued in the 1890s by the National Tobacco Works for their Newsboy brand plug tobacco. They are sepia toned photos mounted on a cream colored stock measuring 6"x4" with red ink frame on the border as well as the Newsboy name. Among the non-sports cabinets you will also find red mounts whose images are albumen images while the green mount images are silver gelatin images.
The actual scope of this set is massive. Baseball players are a very small subset (14 players) of this set. The vast majority of the cabinets you find are of actresses, politicians and other prominent figures of the day. Many cards are still uncatalogued but numbering goes up to 831.
Each card is numbered. Baseball players are found on 174-183, 201-202, 586-587. Since all known subjects have not been found yet, it is believed that there may be more Giants players out there such as George Davis and Duke Farrell.
