Set of the Week: e286 Ju Ju Drums
This week's featured set is the e286 JuJu Drums set. These cards are similar to the e254/270 Colgan Chips in that they are round cards that were placed in tins of candy. The most striking difference, other than the add on the back is that these cards feature a black & white photo on a white background making for a very striking contrast. The cards measure 1 7/16" in diameter. These cards are incredibly rare and are among the rarest of the all the e-card issues.
I was out of the hobby for 10 years, so as far as I know a Ju Ju tin has never been found. If someone knows of one, can you please post a scan. So far, there are 45 known players in the set. New additions to the set are not out of the question given its rarity. One of the interesting errors in the set is that the Donnie Bush cards lists him as playing for Det NL. Go Wolverines!
Let see them if you got them.

Jay - there are actually at least 2 Ju Ju Drum containers known. I hesitate to call them tins though, since they were made of cardboard. They are the same size as Colgan tins. I'll see if I have a scan of one, but one was pictured in "The Old Judge" back in the day, too.

Tough and seldomly discussed set. I actually owned the Doyle pictured in Jay's post at one time. And I know of a board member who once owned a Ju Ju Cobb, although there was quite a bit of paper loss on the back.
Good post.
Good post.

I also used to own that Doyle. This hobby can be very incestuous
Re: Set of the Week: e286 Ju Ju Drums
I met Peter Fishman at the Nationals last year and he had 3 Ju Ju Drum Bush's and I believe he said he owned 2 others at one time. I'll try to see if he can chime in.

That's the scan I remember. Thanks for posting it as I couldn't find a copy on my computer. Jay, I don't recall there being a sideview, although the old picture in the Old Judge may have ahd one.

Killer tough issue! I have one in my type set but can't remember who it is, I am fairly sure it is a common. Many are found with a touch of paperloss on the backs and I am guessing because that part was touching the gum maybe?

Hey lee at al. Not sure I can add any real insight into this set but the few I own came out of an old scrapbook - hence the paper loss. I also remember my dad selling a couple years ago at the Phili shows with back damage to I believe it was Irving Lerner? for some reason the scrapbook had 5 Bush's. We're talking like 1980 here. To this day the couple of times I've seen this player on a juju I always think it was one that my dad sold. Incestuous hobby yes.
I would love to own a container. for the record I do own a cobb and a wagner juju. I look for others but never find them. I'm not a VCP guy so I don't know pop reports - anyone know if there is another cobb/wagner out there?
happy collecting!

A Cobb sold for crazy money (like $13k) last year in SCP. I've seen a couple of Wagners.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I've seen a Ju Ju Cobb in low grade (at least 50% paper loss on the back). So there's definitely several out there at least.
