Circa 1895 Pittsburgh Studio Cabinets on ebay

Post by fisherboy7 on Sun May 09, 2010 9:22 pm

Who else was watching the group of Pittsburgh cabinets circa 1895 on
ebay that ended tonight? Great cards, very unique! Looks
like they might have come as part of a first generation collection.
Not often you see stuff like this on ebay anymore. Your thoughts?

Does this guy look familiar?

Made a run at the Beckley but was $400 or so short. I thought about going after one of the Pittsburgh commons but at over 1200 on average, that was just too rich to me.

Those auctions prove two things: Nice items that are new to the hobby can still be found on Ebay, and quality material will always get good prices, no matter the venue or time of year (Post REA etc...)

I thought the mack was a steal. Very cool photo.

Nice cards. Didn't see them until after they ended.

I thought the Mack went pretty strong, thought the better deals were the Beckley and Donovan cards. Tony gave me a heads up on these and he spoke to the seller, apparently they were found in an old dresser that a lady inherited from her great grandfather.

I had thought the Mack would have ended around 7500 or higher. Such a spectacular card and image; I don't recall ever seeing that photo of Mack before. The Beckley photo was also used for his W600 card I believe.

Does anyone recognize any of the other Pittsburgh players available for sale?

I was the underbidder on the Beckley, probably should have gone higher. I thought the Mack was a pretty full price, and I was surprised by the price of the commons. For those prices I'd rather buy a N173, but maybe that's just me.

is the appeal of these because they're uncat? i have to imagine there are more uncat cabs of other smaller studios floating around? for a conlon i understand because he has ties to mlb back then but i'd rather spend these $$$ buying more established issues than these.

I think part of the appeal is that you get pictures of players with a team that you see often during this time period. The 1895 date is also appealing collectors because there just isn't much in the way of card sets out there from this era. I'm with Chris, $7500 seemed like a good price. You just don't see Mack in a Pirate uniform on anything. I think piece would do better in REA or Heritage.

Isn't that "Coney" Mack?

I went to his island once and had one of his dogs.

I think the pinhole might have held the card down a little but your right it is a rare spectacular image of Mack .
Wonder what one of his N173 Catching pose with a pinhole would have brought.
