Most overrated/overhyped cards

Post by sabrjay on Tue Nov 17, 2009 8:44 pm

What do you think are the most overrated or overhyped cards?

I'd have to put e107s at the top. They are rare, but unless you are trying to put the set together or looking for a certain player, getting a type card really isn't really difficult.

I know collectors will disagree with me but T206 cards are in my opinion.

I'd have to say T216's. So overrated in fact that everyone that has one, should sell them to me. Those bad boys are ready to tank.....lol.

But in all seriousness, I'd have to say the E90-1 Jackson. Yes it is his rookie card, but there are much rarer cards out there, and they don't deserve to sell at the prices they do sell for, IMO.

I'll agree with Mark on T206's, except for the rare backs (Drum, Uzit, Red Hindu, Lenox, BL460's). However that being said I do think that the Piedmont 42's are highly overrated. I don't believe they are all that rare, and they sure don't deserve the premium that they receive.

E107's are rare, but the market was flooded with them over the last year and a half, and as a result it really hurt that set.

And I'm sure most people feel this way, but Tango Eggs cards are also overrated, and this can be seen in the prices these cards have received over the last couple months. A far cry from where they were 2 years ago. Much more available then previously thought.

I know beauty is subjective, but IMO this is one of the ugliest cards out there. Honestly, there has been much written slamming E91 (fake designs), but I prefer some of those to the E90-1 Jackson.

(Thread drift...I'm amazed at how much the E91 Honus Wagner actually looks like him when it is not him at all! If I recall, it is supposed to be Joe Tinker. Maybe it is the ears and the body shape?)

Hmmmm...over-rated...I'd say most cards of Joe Wood. As a diehard Red Sox fan it pains me to say, but Wood's cards should not command the money they do. He had a huge peak for a short time, but no longevity. Hence he is not in the HOF. His Cracker Jacks command more $ than most Hall of Famers in the set.

Speaking of Joe Wood, you can throw Sandy Koufax into the group along with Dwight Gooden. You invert Gooden's career and you are looking at Koufax's career. If Gooden had gone out at the top of his game, we'd be talking about HOFer Dwight Gooden. By the same token, if Koufax's career path mirrored that of Gooden's, I seriously doubt we'd be talking about him as a HOFers. Koufax was a mediocre pitcher at best, barely winning half his games, until Chavez Ravine opened.

T208 Cullivan's Firesides. These have always been overrated and the common selling for $20K+ was an aberration.

I can see why collectors appreciate the E90-1 Jackson, but that card is selling for a fraction of what it sold for two years ago.

I'm not sure the sudden glut of Firesides on the market warrants an overrated status. I think was about 7 years ago when a near master set of e107s offer and number of other single came available shortly after. The set was little known outside of die hard collectors and type card collectors. After these were offered, popularity and interest in the cards took off. e107s have leveled off in interest and price because even though putting a set together is almost impossible, getting a type card isn't and most people that want a type card can get fairly easily. This isn't the case with t208s. There just aren't enough t208s out there to satisfy the demand of the people that would like to own one. This may be most people's best chance to get one at a "decent" price.

By overrated, I just mean that a common like Dygert should not cost over $20K. But who knows? Maybe each and every one of the 33 (18 in Legendary + 15 in REA) cards over $20K; maybe the Plank or Mack cards can set new records as well. If that is the case, then perhaps they are not overrated.

I am not a back collector and it makes no sense to me that a Cullivan's Fireside back would receive a huge premium over card that share identical fronts including the Rochester Baking and Williams Baking cards.

I disagree that e107's are overrated - to me it's one of the most historically significant sets ever produced. Being the first baseball card set of the 20th century, it represents a bridge between the aging late 19th century players, and the up and comers of the early 20th century. The player content is top notch. So many early appearances of HOFers, and final appearances of 19th century stars. The size and design of e107's would also set a precedent for a wide variety of caramel and tobacco cards that followed. Add in the intrigue of its high level of scarcity (especially with certain subjects and variations) and you've got one monster of a set that is understandably one of the most popular and sought after among vintage collectors.

To me, some of the early caramel issues are somewhat overrated (E93, E95, E97, E98), especially the ones that share poses with other sets (ie. E101, E102). After the caramel boom a few years ago the prices on these ballooned, and while they've since come back down to earth, they just bore me for the most part.

Coming from the land of T202s the 2 commons considered tough, Birmingham's HR and Nearly Caught are not the toughest commons in the set. Nearly Caught is an average common whereas the Birmingham HR is a little tough but no where near the price that it commands. One of the 6 Cobbs is definately tougher than the others. If you have ever tried to collect the set you will find out the tougher commons by always getting out bid and wonder why. T202's have always been a funny set price wise but still my pride and joy.

The e107 is a very important set, but for me it falls under the over hyped category. I do like the set for all the reason you stated. I will agree also with the sentiment that the t206 is over hyped. I wouldn't put t205s in that category. They can often fly under the radar and deals on tough cards can be found on a regular basis. That doesn't happen when a tough t206 shows up on eBay. I'd also add Old Judge pose variations to this list. Beyond the few people (maybe 5 at most) working on a master set, minute pose variations just don't do it for me.

t205's are overrated to me not b/c of price but b/c of how widely they are collected. They are so plentiful and not very attractive (imo) so I don't really get the appeal.

Sacrilege. T205s are one of the best looking sets of all time. Then again, I like gaudy, garish designs.

The T205 American Leaguers are my favorite looking vintage card, the National Leaguers are a bit blah.

T205s

Post by T206Collector on Thu Dec 10, 2009 5:40 pm

T205s are really ugly. The best example is Ty Cobb. There are so few "bad" images of Ty Cobb out there, but the T205 is horrendous -- he has no neck, his eyes are too close together and the look on his face is unbelievably stupid. They put the head in the middle of the card, floating there with a ton of ugly green and red nonsense around it. It's a Christmas ornament gone awry.

I'm just the opposite, I love the t205 set and think that outside of the t222 and e95, Cobb's cards are pretty pedestrian. I will admit the t205 is not great, but I like it better than any of his t206s
