L1 Leathers - who, how, why & more. L1wjoh10

Who distributed these?
How was that done?
What did you have to do to get one?
What were they for (just display)?
How were they manufactured? Image burned into leather, inked, other?

Do you know of articles, or other descriptive written material which I can use as a reference, or introduction?

Gil, They were Turkey red Premiums just like T3's & S81's. I think they required more coupons than the T3's did. At the time there was also premium Leathers of Indian Chiefs, Generals & Hamilton Girls.
An unusual premium to say the least.

I don't know the answer, but my guess is that it's ink that was stamped on from a plate/stencil.

Certainly an unusual and seldomly discussed issue. Ever seen what these sell for? Crazy prices (don't ask me why). Sure, they're exceptionally scarce, but is there really much demand for them? I'm guessing that Johnson pictured above would sell well into 5 figures.

There are also two sizes. The small ones are about 12 inches, while the large ones are close to 3 feet. I've seen some of the large Indian Chief ones and they are stunning. I have pictures, but the collector that owns them asked not post them publicly when he sent me the pictures.
