The Scientific Method
Jake Beckley, first baseman, liked pulling the hidden ball trick particularly on unsuspecting newcomers. And he had quite an arsenal of variations. Sometimes he'd stick the ball in his clothing, or under his arm, other times he would hide it under the base (I guess the bases were a bit different then).
One day with Louisville's Honus Wagner on first, Jake smuggled an extra ball on to the field, and stuffed it under his arm. Wagner could clearly see the ball under his arm, and when the umpire's back was turned, Wagner grabbed the ball and threw it into the outfield; taking off for second base. Unfortunately for Honus, the pitcher was holding the game ball, and easily threw him out at second.
