Neat story: 1869 Peck & Snyder CDV find
Came across this story this morning about a P&S CDV found by 72 year old Bernice Gallego in Fresno, CA:
Always nice to hear about finds like this one. It's a nice example too, with RED printing on both sides. Not sure if that's less common among the small population of P&S CDV's?Fresno collectors uncover rare 1869 baseball card
Bernice Gallego sat down one day this summer, as she does pretty much every day, and began listing items on eBay.
She dug into a box and pulled out a baseball card. She stopped for a moment and admired the picture. "Red Stocking B.B. Club of Cincinnati," the card read, under a sepia tone photo of 10 men with their socks pulled up to their knees. The card itself was dirty and wrinkled in a few places.
It was definitely old, Gallego thought. As a collector and seller, it's her job to spot old items that might have value today, to find the gems among the junk. continue reading...

Since these things are so common that they are turning up in boxes of junk (and no doubt being thrown away accidentally, as well); it becomes time to ask: "which back"?
Afterall not all backs are common, are they?

Thats a pretty incredible story that makes me wonder what else is still out there. When I first started collecting old cardboard I would look for any articles relating to old finds because they kinda fascinate me. I guess I would fantasize about my own find, of course living in san diego has really put a damper on any chance of finding an "attic/grandfather" collection. From what I recall from the last seven or eight years, the most famous finds are (not in any particular order):
1. The truckers find (Leon Lucky) found many great cards such as an E90-2 Wagner
2. The Beckett Wagner
3. The SGC 1914 Crackerjack near mint to mint complete set
4. The Ward, Corcoran, Richardson Kalamazoo find which sold in the 2008 Robert Edwards Auction.
What great finds do you remember?

hey ben,
that almost reminds me of julie with her P&S...how is she doing?
a couple other big finds like the 100 or so e107s that was thrown into the trash and literally had to be dug back out a couple years ago (that yielded the delahanty).
the big oj find by david levin in oregon...i'm discounting smaller finds like '14 cjs or the 17 m131s with cobb/wagner etc.

Reminded me of Julie a bit too, except Julie knew every detail about her cards. I haven't conversed with her in a few months, but last time I heard from her she seemed to be doing quite well. It's about time I emailed so thanks for the reminder.cccc wrote:that almost reminds me of julie with her P&S...how is she doing?
She sure had a heck of a P&S CDV, and it was one of her favorites. It was kept raw, in a mylar sheath and plastic case.
As far as I know there are 4 different backs: blank, advertisement with blue printing, black/gray printing, and red printing. The back color matches the caption color on the front. Not sure which back is the scarcest, but the advertisement back is more desirable than the blank, or at least it is to me.TheRiddler wrote:Since these things are so common that they are turning up in boxes of junk (and no doubt being thrown away accidentally, as well); it becomes time to ask: "which back"?

"There is talk of it being a million dollar card." -Bernice
Yeah, good luck with that.
Anybody care to venture a real guess as to how much it will bring?

250K is my guess. Though with all the hype about it, who knows.

50k because of the hype. Normally they don't sell for that much even. I wonder where Bernice got the idea that it might be a million dollar card?
Julie sold hers for 25k in REA a few years ago and it was just as nice, probably nicer...

Re: Neat story: 1869 Peck & Snyder CDV find
I'll guess around $120K and only because of the hype. What did that trimmed one on eBay end up going for recently? That guy had a BIN for $25K on it for months prior to Bernice's find and all the ensuing hype. Talk about having the right card at the right time!
Editted to point out... I just realized that the auction is live. Apparently Memory Lane decided to do a one card auction on their site. Apologies for "outing a live auction."

30k for that recent trimmed one on ebay is an astonishing sum.
Here is a similar trimmed example from a 2005 REA auction which sold for just 7k before juice:
Peck and Snyder owners must be rejoicing right now. Strike while the iron is hot huh?
