Old Judge - Set Description Overwiew
These cards were issued for several years beginning in 1887. The first years cards are distinguishable by the name "Old Judge" appearing in a crescent or a box in the picture area of the card. The cards issued after 1887 do not have the name Old Judge in the image area.
Those for 1888 have the caption at the card bottom which includes "Old Judge" under the copyright identification. This is followed by "Cigarettes" on the following line, and Goodwin & Co., New York on the last line
The cards issued in 1889 are similar, however there is one change in the caption:the term "Cigarettes" typical of the 1888 issue, is changed to "Cigarette Factory" for 1889.
In 1890 the Player's League was formed. Cards from this year are identifiable by having the league designation (PL or NL) at the end of the "player name, position, team city" line.
