T206 unique factory cuts

Post by 3-2-count on Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:47 am

I recently purchased a raw T206 Tinker portrait with a very unique factory cut. Other cards I have seen from the T206 set that have factory miscut's with large top borders such as this will almost always show the players name again on top due to the factory cutting into the next card on the sheet. Might this card be from the very top row of the original factory sheet which would have had no card above it and did the factory sheets have large white borders surrounding it like this card displays. I'd be interested to see if other Full Count board members have cards with similiar cuts that have huge top or bottom borders. I also thought the color and registration detail on this card were extremely sharp.

I know one collector that actively pursues t206s with name on the top and bottom.

Jay -
I think I know of the collector your speaking of. Would be interesting to see if he has any with a top border
as big as this one that doesn't show a name on top either. That's why Im thinking this card was cut from the
top of the original factory sheet which wouldn't of had a name on top of it, just a larger white border.
Just my guess at a theory?? question

That is supposition. I've also seen a few cards where there is a name on top, but none on the bottom with a bottom border big enough for a name, but it's not there. I haven't heard a good explanation as to how this happened.

That explanation makes sense to me. No other reason why there wouldn't be a name on top. You don't see many with that much extra top border. That Evers that Pete posted could be an example of a "top card" that was cut normally.

Great color and register on that Tinker, wow...

I tend to like...

....the big border T206 cards as well because I think they tend to disprove allegations of trimming. Interestingly, and as seen in that Cobb SGC 50, the card companies have a hard time with them -- especially when they show a name at the top as well as the bottom, these cards tend to be labeled as MC by PSA or downgraded by SGC. But I think this condition should be rewarded, though I understand why the grading companies are doing this -- adhering to a standard.

Here is a card that measures correct with no name and full enough borders:

I feel the grade is way too low, should be a 30, I thought 10 was for the well loved cards. scratch

Beckett is now the exception. Since I've been consulting with them on security issues, I decided to send some cards in. They got the miscut T201 Stovall/Turner/Cobb/Crawford card. They had a meeting over these type of cards and made the decision from this point on that if the second card or name is identifiable then they will label it as such and grade the condition of the card. Under the name is the word "miscut" but is meant to identify the error, not to downgrade.

Just got my BVG 4 T201 with the four name label....nice!

Beckett is now the exception?

Post by T206Collector on Mon Aug 04, 2008 3:41 pm

How is what Beckett does any different from what PSA does, i.e., grade the card with an MC label?

The miscut on the label is only an identifier that it is an error-type. Cards that are truly miscut without a second card/name showing will get hammered on the grade and not have the miscut tag.

I suggested they used the term “error-cut”, so collectors will not be confused with PSA’s qualifier. It's a step in the right direction though.

...and what a fine card it is! One of my favorites.

If you ask me I really think it was a bargain. You gave it an Ex in your description and was spot on but there was a bend in one corner. I could have easily taken it out but decided to play nice with Beckett, so the 5 went to a 4. Again, thanks for the great card....it has a permanent home!
