Boston Garter Cobb on ebay - thoughts?

Post by fisherboy7 on Fri May 09, 2008 2:09 pm

This Boston Garter Cobb was listed on ebay today.

The card looks good but there seem to be a bunch of red flags in the description. The seller is from Germany and has perfect feedback. Possibly a hijacked account and/or a stolen scan? Obviously this is an extremely valuable card we're talking about here if it's a legit auction. Seems highly unlikely though. Your thoughts?

Does anyone have a scan of the SGC 50 copy that was sold by Hunts one year ago?

This would be an amazing purchase if legit, but there are just way too many red flags with a seller from Germany who professes to have no knowledge about baseball cards.

I would have to guess...the winner will not be getting the card, and $150 for shipping!!!!!
his is what they write...

We are a sport-bets company and sell this baseball card.
Allegedly this card is very desired,as we found out.
In Germany are baseball-cards not a collecting hobby, therefore we sell this card here.
The card was found at a housing evacuation of an old deceased married couple.
He collected old stamps and coins and other rare articles. The card also participated.
Card Description: 1914 Ty Cobb Boston Garter (see picture)
We asked an art dealer to the authenticity of the card.
Paper, color, pressure etc. corresponds the age of the card.
We give 100% a certificate of authenticity Guarantee, but
we cannot say anything about the quality from the card.
we do not know since, what is worth this card,we sell with starting price $1 and no reserve.

WOW that was quick! I saved the scan of the front just incase anyone missed it and was curious about what it looked like. It could very well be the SGC 50 from last year's Hunts auction, Wes.

hunts cobb

Here is the cobb from hunts. It looks very similar - corner rounding. But there are staining and border differences. Either it is a different card, or a doctored scan.

Dear jeck71,

If you wouldn't mind, could you sent a scan/pic of the Cobb card next to a piece of paper with "jech71" written on it? I know it's a pain but perhaps that service could be included in the $100 shipping charge?

If this card and auction are legit, I'm willing to put down significant money on it.

Thank you.

Way too many red flags. I'm surprised that the bidding is as high as it is!

Got this response today....with scans identical to the auction scans attached

Hello,
Unfortunately Ebay has the card taken out, because the certificate of authenticity was not thereby. it us was advised, the card over Mastros, Hunts, REA, etc.to sell. if you have interest to an buy it now price, please send us simply a Email.(Jech71@aol.com or a info@wettdepot.de)
If you have no interest to the card, perhaps can you give us a tap, where we the card best to sell to be able? (the best market-place to sell baseball-cards)
Thank you very much.
Many regards,
Jens

I'm not exactly sure what the guy said in that response Ben, but I like the way he said it. Very smooth, reminded me of the scene in Airplane where the older woman is translating jive.
