Anyone have any opinion on Beckett vintage grading?

Post by lentel on Mon May 12, 2008 9:34 am

Wanted to buy a card graded by Beckett Vintage Grading and wondered if anyone have any experience with them or opinion on how they grade their cards? Seems like they are never really mentioned or considered.
thanks

Think Beckett is good at grading only 1950's and above. Beckett seems to be really tough on 100 year old cards so they shy away from them. I would buy the card and crack it out and send to SGC or PSA.

I have been a happy with all the Beckett vintage cards I have bought except for the holders weighing a ton, but that is minor.

I have only had a few BVG cards, but found their grading just a bit conservative. Their slabs are a project to crack open.

It may seem minor, but I really don't like their holders. Just personal preference though.

I was asked by Beckett to test their products in every conceivable way. Essentially try to crack clean halves, remove frosting, open w/o frost, replace cards, replicate flips etc. For me, it's really an enjoyable part of the hobby and glad I could help.

I can say with certainty that in my opinion, Beckett has the strongest and most secure (in all aspects) holder in the hobby. No other is even close.

I'm just curious, how do they seal the holder? Do they use a glue?
I like becket holders, They're very durable.

I have to agree, their grading is quite conservative but the holders are incredibly ugly

They are not glued, actually they seem similar to me to those of GAI in that the two halves fit together with one fitting inside of the other. Sort of like [] with one bracket just small enough to fit inside of the other.

Here are the results of just a portion of a test I did for Beckett. Quite amazing.
