1952 Topps Mantle fake ?

Post  weezy80 on Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:15 pm

So I made the probable mistake of buying a 1952 Topps Mantle without doing my research because I got excited over the $2300 price tag . I bought it from a private seller who's had it for 19 years , apparently . He seemed like a good guy , I have his address and everything . Should I even bother sending it in to PSA or just try to get my money back . I also don't know how to get that picture bigger . I can forward it to anyone's email because I do have a bigger pic if possible . Thanks

If you know it is a fake, then I wouldn't bother sending it to PSA or any other slabber. I would try to get your money back. If the seller is hesitant, remind him that he committed a federal felony by using the USPS. If the guy isn't a total scumbag and was hoping to unload it a known fake on some other unsuspecting person, then the fear of intervention via law enforce, etc is usually enough to scare someone like that into doing the right thing. If he is a con artist, then you have a tough road ahead of you.

A very tough road, look what happened to Mr. Chan for selling $25K fakes,,, nothing.

How about posting a large scan here for us to see? No need to send to a grading service. Use this board for free.

the description says it all...

"This card was found in a Senior Retirement
Center Storage unit while cleaning it out.In Fair condition. Several
small creases, slightly rounded corners."

Man, those seniors really know how to destroy a Mantle card.

I would have to say slim to none chance of it being real. Never buy a Mantle card off ebay unless it is graded. I am shocked Ebay allowed that Raw card to be listed.

It was my understanding that the red box on the reverse of the card should have four sharp corners, not one that is perfectly rounded with the rounding of the upper left corner.

I could be wrong though.
