I was going to post this in Gil's "best buy" thread but I realized that these cards don't show up nearly often enough to qualify. Also, they tend to be on the pricey side if/when they do show up. Still, it seems to me that the Leader Novelty Candy cards are largely unrecognized by the majority of prewar collectors, likely because of their scarcity/obscurity. So much so that they aren't even listed on the Old Cardboard site. So I thought it might be a neat set to discuss.

Best way to fly with cards?

I'm planning on bringing some cards to the National, but I've never flown with any. I'm not sure I like the idea of flying with them. I'm a New Yorker and I've avoided flying since 9/11, so I'm not aware of any of the new security procedures. Can they be taken on a carry on bag or are they too dangerous?

Any tips on flying with cards would be welcome.

Has anyone else not received their auction winnings?

My invoice was marked 7/3/08 and I immediately sent payment in the form of a check.

The check cleared on 7/11, and I still have not received my package.

Is this normal? Is it because this is my first time winning a lot from one of their auctions?

I thought about emailing them, but thought I'd ask here first.

T206 unique factory cuts

I recently purchased a raw T206 Tinker portrait with a very unique factory cut. Other cards I have seen from the T206 set that have factory miscut's with large top borders such as this will almost always show the players name again on top due to the factory cutting into the next card on the sheet. Might this card be from the very top row of the original factory sheet which would have had no card above it and did the factory sheets have large white borders surrounding it like this card displays. ...

So if I wanted just one, graded T206 Cobb, which variation would you recommend and what would be the minimum grade? I wouldn't want a beater and can't afford high end.

Looking for a very presentable T206 Cobb (bat off shoulder) in SGC 10 - 40 condition or PSA 1 - 3 condition.

If the card falls into the higher grading range, I'd like to do a cash/trade combo if possible.

pay a premium for a low grade example of a #1 card in a set? I understand paying a premium for high grade examples because they are generally hard to find, but there is nothing difficult about locating a low grade example. Worst offender is the Bengough card in 1933 Goudey set. Almost every large group of Goudeys I've ever seen had a Bengough, but never a really nice one. Another one is the Lefty Grove crad in the Diamond Star set. The card is super common, yet beat crap examples pull stupid ...

I actually agree with Mastro on its assertation that a jumbo size card should carry a premium and be more desirable than a standard size card. I can around to this thinking back in the late 80s when jumbos were being scooped up to be trimmed down for resale to Copeland and others seeking high grade examples.

Part of the description interested me in that it attempts to rank the best Wagner's out there. I've been lucky enough to see several on the list. Here is that portion from the auction

Ebay has been so dead lately, how about this W600 Young that showed up yesterday? The large scan is very poor, but judging from the closeup scan, the card looks 100% authentic to me. I have no idea about the sig though. If that sig is good, boy what a special piece this is.

By the way....It's listed in the pre-1930's with a reserve, so there's no "outing" of an auction here (we don't worry about that anyway, do we). I'm sure most of us have seen the auction already, what are ...

Does this cabinet look strange to anyone else? Personally I've never seen a 19th century cabinet resembling this one. Could it be just a woodcut pasted onto a cabinet card backing. Any input is appreciated.

This is my daughter and i on her 1st birthday. Wish it were August again here in CT. We have 15 inches of snow on the ground now. I have a 7 year old son also.

Well, i am a stay-at-home Dad and have been since my son was 4 years old. I have changed what i collect over the last 2 years a few times. I have lived in CT all my life. I hope to make it to a Nationals some time in the near future. I have never been to one yet and would love to meet and talk to collectors.

Such as are frequently encountered with the Buchner Gold Coin set. I always thought of these as undesireable. Well, the Gold Coin cutouts often have bold dark lettering superimposed on the images.

Mastro's Lot 1 currently prouldy displays similar cutouts along side of legitimate set examples in a rarer (n321) card set.
